RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- It was a long season for California Baptist, but it ended with a flurry, as the Lancers shut out San Diego Christian by a score of 6-0 in the final match of the season Saturday in Riverside. It was the first time since Oct. 8, 2003 that the Lancers scored 4 or more goals in a game. They end the season with a final record of 7-7-4, 3-6-1 (10 points) GSAC. San Diego Christian ends its year with a record of 1-16, 0-10 (0 points) GSAC.
Junior midfielder Salvador Ramos and freshman striker Fashinu-Ron Nesbeth both netted a pair of goals for California Baptist, while Maurice Garcia and Ramy Makar each posted a goal in his final collegiate match.
“I'm proud of the guys. They actually played pretty consistent this year,” head coach Shayon Jalayer said. “I'm proud of the way they responded today, that kind of shows you the leadership of this group.”
The Lancers didn't waste any time putting up their first score on the afternoon, as Garcia headed in a free kick from fellow defender Brian Cavazos for his first goal on the year just 11 minutes into the contest.
California Baptist had plenty of opportunities to add to its lead in the first half, but Hawk goalkeeper Jordan Smith made a couple of outstanding saves to stop 1-v-1 opportunities and keep his team in the game. Smith ended with 7 saves for San Diego Christian.
Freshman midfielder Brandon Staples' throw-in in the 51st minute found its way to Ramos, who settled the ball and nailed a shot just inside the box for his first tally.
Nesbeth then had a pair of breakaway goals that were both set up from perfect passes off the foot of Jose Solis in the 63rd and 69th minutes.
“I think part of the ups and downs of the season have to do with the fact that we played the freshmen and put a lot of pressure on them,” Jalayer said. “They did awesome this year though. I think Robbie (Dodson), Fashi (Nesbeth) and Brandon (Staples) are going to be great in this conference for years to come. They've made an impact already.”
The Lancers stretched out their lead in the 83rd minute when Garcia served up a ball on a free kick. Ryan Loza then had a touch on the ball, which set Makar in perfect position to beat the keeper. Ramos' second goal came in the game's final minute, making the final score 6-0.
Goalkeeper Joshua Blanco made just one save on the afternoon for California Baptist, as the Lancers fired away 28 shots (13 on-goal) compared to just 8 attempts and one shot on-frame by the Hawks.
California Baptist loses 7 seniors with the close of the season, including 4-year players Garcia and Tim Walker. Cavazos and Fraser Kershaw each ends his career after playing 3 years on the team.
“Most of the seniors were players I inherited when I came here,” Jalayer, who finishes out his third year at the helm, said. “This is definitely a class I feel extremely close to, they were always there for me. When things were bad, they were always there to keep me going. They're going to be good people. They're going to have an impact on society, and that's really what you want to accomplish.”
