SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- No. 6 California Baptist University needed a bounce back match after dropping its first contest of the year last Saturday to then No. 9 Biola.
A trip to Santa Clarita was just what the doctor ordered for the Lancers who got a 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 24-26, 25-18) victory over The Master's Tuesday night. It was the team's 19th overall victory and sixth conference win against only one loss on the season.
“It was good to come back and get a win tonight,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “It is a long season and one match at this point is not going to make or break us, but I was still glad to get the win.”
The Lancers were on the verge of a rare GSAC sweep Tuesday night, but the Mustangs dug deep and pulled out a 26-24 victory in the third to keep the home crowd hopeful for just one more set.
However, CBU was just too much to handle for The Master's, taking the fourth and final set after falling behind 3-0. The Lancers used a late five point run to take control of the set and steal back any momentum the Mustangs had gained. The blue and gold then finished the home team off with a four point run.
The Lancers also fell behind to begin the third set, going down by what seemed an insurmountable deficit of 12-3, but came back to tie things at 21-21 on a kill by Ingrid Carmona. The Mustangs got a couple of errors from the Lancers and a clutch kill to end the set and win their only game of the night.
CBU only trailed early in the first set and not at all in the second taking a comfortable 2-0 lead to start the night.
Coming off their worst offensive night of the year, the Lancers hit .235 for 48 kills to get the road victory. Carmona recorded 12 kills as the only Lancer in double digits and Jessica Kalama had nine to lead the way for CBU. After recording 17 digs against Biola, Kari Oliver had 16 digs Tuesday for her second and third highest totals of the season.
The Lancers are currently tied with Biola for second in the GSAC, but hold the edge in overall record. CBU gets set to welcome the No. 1 team in the NAIA into the Van Dyne Gym Saturday, as Fresno Pacific gets set to come to town.
