NO LUCK WITH APU
RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? No. 19 California Baptist had three players in double-figures, but couldn't overcome a late deficit falling 78-71 to No. 7 Azusa Pacific, Saturday, in Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers (11-5, 5-4 GSAC) got a game-high 20 points from Nicole Davis, but she was matched by the Cougars' (16-3, 8-1) Abby Johnson who also scored 20.
Jeanine Deno added 15 points and Brenna Hahn scored 11 as the Lancers struggled from the field hitting 23-for-58 from the floor. Bryana Williams ripped down 11 rebounds for CBU.
The Lancers trailed by as much as 14 (28-14), but used a 14-6 run to close out the half to bring it to 34-28 heading into the second half. CBU took its first lead since it was up 2-0 when Davis gave the Lancers a 39-38 lead with a layup just minutes into the second half.
CBU took its biggest lead of the game at 45-40 with 12:40 left on a pair of free throws by Erin Greenberg. It was down hill from there for the Lancers as APU went on an 11-2 run to take the lead for good at 51-47. The Cougars pushed the lead out to 74-62, the biggest lead of the second half, with just 31 seconds left.
The Lancers were out rebounded 55-38 with Johnson leading the way with 17. CBU also struggled from the line hitting just 18-of-29.
California Baptist will now get set to host Concordia, Tuesday, at 5:30 p.m.
