LA MIRADA, Calif. ? For the first time in two years, Biola can claim a victory over California Baptist after the fourth-ranked Eagles upset the third-ranked Lancers, 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 26-24).
The Lancers (18-4, 7-3 GSAC) posted just a .126 (33-19-111) clip and had just one player in double-figure kills. Noelle Dyk led the Lancers with 13 kills and ripped a .407 clip, but the junior didn't get much help. Fei Shi hit a season low -.122 and posted just five kills with 10 errors.
While the Lancers' offense never got going, CBU's defense had three different people notch double-digit digs with Katrina Clark leading the way with 14. Dyk notched 12 digs while Shi posted 10.
After breaking a 4-4 tie early in the first set, Biola cruised through the first two sets to take a 2-0 match lead. California Baptist took its first lead in the third set after it opened with a 5-0 run. Dyk ripped three kills in that stretch and the Lancers looked to be on their way to taking a set back.
CBU took their biggest lead at 13-7 and led 19-14, but the Eagles answered with five straight to tie it at 19. Rene Simon put the Lancers back on top at 20-19 with a kill, but Meghan Warkentin tied it at 20 with a kill. After Warkentin gave the lead back to the Lancers on a service error, Biola took the lead, at 22-21, on a Jessica Buffum kill and an error from the Lancers.
The Lancers regained at the lead at 24-23 on a Dyk kill, but consecutive errors by CBU set up match-point and Kelsey Christoferson put it away with the final kill.
The loss to the Eagles gives Biola sole possession of second place in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
