SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? California Baptist tried to go for a tripleheader sweep Sunday, but a second half surge by Redlands spoiled any such plans. The Lancers (4-2) opened the day with a 17-9 win over Claremont-Mudd Scripps and then almost mirrored that game with a 16-9 victory over Pomona-Pitzer. CBU couldn't pull off the trifecta falling 13-9 to Redlands.

In the opener against CMS, Brent Troutman recorded his first hat trick of the year with all three goals coming in the first half. CBU went down 2-0 in the first three minutes of the game, but closed out the opening quarter with four straight goals. Jeff Woolstenhulme put the Lancers on the board before Troutman and Morgan combined for three goals in the final two minutes of the first to give CBU a 4-2 lead.

The Stags opened the second quarter with a goal to make it 4-3, but Aaron Steiger put the Lancers up 5-3 with the first of his three goals. CMS cut it to 5-4 and after Alan Ogden scored, the Stags cut it again to one at 6-5. That was as close as CMS got as the Lancers scored the next five goals.

Troutman scored his third of the day with 2:18 left in the half just before Chris Toy scored back-to-back goals to close out the second quarter as the Lancers led 9-5. Morgan opened the third with a goal just before Steiger made it 11-5 with 5:28 left in the third. The Stags finally stopped the run, but Steiger completed his hat trick to give CBU a 12-6 lead. CMS scored with just six seconds left to make it 12-7 heading into the fourth.

Five different Lancers scored solo goals in the fourth as CBU put the Stags away. Alex Shorts, Peter Hines, Tommy Hunter, Beau Brumley and Kellan Frericks all found the back of the net in the final quarter.

Steiger notched his fourth hat trick in five games in the win over Pomona-Pitzer. For the second straight game CBU trailed 2-0, but Toy and Norbert Karoly pulled the Lancers within one at 3-2 at the end of the first.

CBU opened the second with five straight goals including back-to-back goals from Troutman in the middle of the run. The Lancers held a 7-4 lead at the half and pushed it to 9-5 in the third on goals by Steiger and Karoly. The Sagehens cut it to 9-7 before Ogden closed the third with a goal with one tick left on the clock.

Troutman notched his second consecutive hat trick to open the fourth to put CBU up 11-7. Pomona-Pitzer cut it to two again with a pair of goals before the Lancers scored the last five goals of the game to grab the win.

Unlike the first two games of the day, it was California Baptist who jumped out to an early lead against the Bulldogs. Steiger and Morgan put the Lancers up early 2-0, but the lead evaporated quickly. Redlands closed out the first quarter with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead.

Ogden tied it in the second at three, but the Bulldogs answered with consecutive goals to make it 5-3. Woolstenhulme and Ogden brought the Lancers back into it with a pair of goals, but the Bulldogs answered again with just 32 seconds left to hold a 6-5 advantage. With just 12 seconds left in the half, Woolstenhulme ripped a shot in the back of the net to knot it at six.

It was all Redlands in the second half as CBU just ran out of gas in the final two quarters. Woolstenhulme scored two of CBU's three second-half goals with Toy coming up with the other.

The Lancers head out to Beantown next weekend as they will play in the MIT Invitational in Boston, Mass. The Lancers open with Brown, Friday, and will play three games Saturday and a pair Sunday.
