FULLERTON, Calif. — Who says you can't win with youth? California Baptist University had two freshmen lead the charge in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-17) win over Hope International, Saturday night.

Ingrid Carmona and Melinda Adelin combined for 19 kills as Carmona led the way for the Lancers (18-2, 8-2 GSAC) with 10 kills. Carmona also added six digs and hit .368. Fei Shi added eight kills and 10 digs to go with her two aces.

Krista Hasemeyer and Danielle Sargant split the setting duties with Hasemeyer dishing out a match-high 23 assists while Sargant had 16. Colleen Sweeney posted a team-high four blocks while Kari Oliver had seven digs. Jessica Kalama also had seven digs.

The Royals took the Lancers by surprise in the first set, taking an 8-5 lead. CBU responded by scoring six straight, including a pair of aces from Hasemeyer, to lead 11-8. The Lancers took their biggest lead of the set at 22-16 on a Noelle Dyk kill. Hope got within four at 23-19, but back-to-back kills from Bree Rauschenbach and Adelin closed out the set.

The Lancers led from the first serve to the final point in the second set. CBU jumped out to a 7-3 lead before an HIU timeout. That didn't slow down the Lancer's offense as they climbed out to a 16-6 lead, their biggest of the set. The Royals tried to chip away at the lead and got within six at 24-18, but an error handed the set over to CBU who took a 2-0 lead in the match.

CBU held a lead no bigger than five, until it used a 7-0 run to bust open the third set, taking a 22-11 lead. The Royals didn't let the Lancers run away, scoring five straight to cut it to 22-16. CBU put it away, scoring three of the final four points. Adelin, Shi and Sweeney recorded a kill each to seal the match.

Now at the halfway point of the Golden State Athletic Conference season, CBU stands in second place and has seven of its final 11 matches at home. Two of those home contests are next week as the Lancers host Azusa Pacific, Thursday, and Westmont, Saturday. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
