LA MIRADA, Calif. — So far the road has not been too rough for No. 2 California Baptist University. Two fiv- set losses, one to the top-ranked team in the country, but Saturday night the Lancers hit a large pot hole with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21) loss to No. 11 Biola.
For the second straight year, the Eagles Nest was a harsh environment for the Lancers (23-3, 13-3 GSAC). CBU hit just .154 (53-29-156) and were out dug (64-57), out blocked (10-9) and out aced (9-6) for the first time this season.
Ingrid Carmona did have a match-high 14 kills and hit .370 while three other Lancers had double-figure kills. Fei Shi and Melinda Adelin each ripped 11 kills while Noelle Dyk had 10. Shi and Dyk though hit under .200; just the fourth time this year for Shi. Shi posted her 12th double-double of the year with 11 digs adding to her kills.
Danielle Sargant dished out a team-high 29 assists while Krista Hasemeyer was right behind with 21. Dyk and Chloe Ainsworth each had a pair of aces. Kari Oliver had 15 digs while Bree Rauschenbach led the way at the net with five blocks.
CBU scored the first three points of the match, but Biola used an 8-2 run, after CBU took a 5-3 lead, to lead 11-7. The Eagles didn't trail from there. Biola blew open the first set, leading 12-9, with a 6-1 run to take an 18-10 lead. CBU cut the deficit to three on three occasions with the final being at 22-19, but the Eagles scored three of the final four points to take a 1-0 match lead.
The second set had 11 ties and four lead changes. The final tie came at 14-14 when a pair of Eagle kills and a CBU error put Biola up for good at 17-14. The Lancers cut it to 19-18, but Biola answered right back, scoring the next five points to lead 24-18. The Lancers scored two more points before the Eagles put it away and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
Hope started to spring up for the Lancers after taking set three. The Lancers led 9-8 in the third when Carmona blasted a kill that sparked a 13-3 run to give CBU a 20-12 lead. That lead evaporated as the Eagles used an 11-3 lead to tie the set at 23. Biola had match-point after a CBU error, but two Carmona kills and a Biola error gave the set to CBU and forced a fourth set.
CBU held a 15-11 lead after using a 6-1 run in the fourth set, but that was just the beginning of the end for the Lancers. Biola answered with a 10-1 run that deflated the Lancers. Seven of the 10 points in that run came off the Lancer errors. CBU closed the gap to 22-19, but Biola pushed it out to match point at 24-19. Despite a kill each from Carmona and Shi to make it 24-21, the inevitable happened with a final Biola kill.
The Lancers will now have to rebound on the road when they travel to The Master's, Tuesday, before hosting No. 1 Fresno Pacific, Nov. 7.
