COUGARS CRASH PARTY
RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Jeanine Deno scored a team-high 19 points for California Baptist University in a 79-63 loss to Azusa Pacific. Deno also recorded her first double-double of her career with a career-high 12 rebounds.
The Lancers (13-9, 5-7 GSAC) trailed the entire game and shot just 38.7 percent from the floor.
Brianna Estell was the only other Lancers in double figures with 11 points. Nicole Davis' streak of 21 straight games in double figures came to an end, scoring eight points.
The Cougars (16-6, 7-5 GSAC) got a career-high 30 points and 15 rebounds from Alex Moore-Porter. Moore-Porter combined with fellow post, Kristie Hala'ufia, to get 30 boards with Hala'ufia also grabbing 15 rebounds. APU doubled the Lancers on second-chance points, 24-12, and out rebounded CBU, 53-42, with 22 boards coming on the offensive end.
In the first half the Lancers hit just one trey (1-11) and shot 37.1 percent from the field. Azusa took its first double-digit lead of the half at 23-13 on a 6-0 run. CBU cut to 28-21 with 7:07 left, but the Cougars answered with five straight to take a 33-21 lead. APU took its biggest lead of the half at 42-28, but CBU answered with a Megan Bradford three and a Davis jumper to get within nine at 42-33. The Cougars added a pair of free-throws with 29 seconds left to take a 44-33 lead at the half.
CBU cut the lead down to nine on three occasions in the second half with the last coming at 60-51 with 8:36 left. APU scored six straight to push the lead back out to 64-51 and lead by double digits from that point on.
California Baptist will now host Westmont, Tuesday, at 5:30 p.m.
