SIOUX CITY, Iowa --- It took both teams traveling mare than 1,500 miles and ending up in the same NAIA National Tournament pool, but California Baptist University and Biola finally got to play a rubber match in what has been a heated series thus far this season.
After seeing the Eagles end their program-record 18-match win streak early in the year and then getting redemption with a 3-1 victory a month later, the Lancers took advantage of the opportunity to settle the score and defeated Biola 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-17).
CBU used an eight-point run in the second set to erase a 20-12 deficit, stealing the momentum from the Eagles and carrying it through to the straight-set victory.
“If we lost that second game it's a whole different match,” said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. “It was just as important that we started game three on a good run. Carrying that momentum over was huge.”
The Lancers opened up the final set on a 13-1 run, giving the Eagles little hope of a comeback.
CBU went on that second-game run behind the service of Jessica Kalama, getting an error from Biola and then an emphatic block from Jelena Dragovic and Nevena Dragovic to force a quick timeout from the Eagles.
Out of the timeout the Lancers got a string of four straight kills, three of which came from the hot-handed Ingrid Carmona. Another block by the Dragovic sisters forced a second Biola timeout.
CBU would score one more point to tie the score at 20-20 before the Eagles ended the run . Far from done, however, the Lancers rattled off five-more quick points, ending the set with a crushing block by Bree Rauschenbach and Nevena Dragovic.
The Lancers got five more blocks during their dominating run to start the third set.
“I loved our cumulative effort out there today,” said McGuyre. “As we've said all year, for us to be successful we have to have everyone playing at a high level and we did. Ingrid especially was phenomenal in that match, she was almost unstoppable.”
Carmona led all players with 18 kills on 35 attempts and only four errors for a .400 hitting percentage. The sophomore opposite hitter has had just four errors in each of the last two matches and has upped her attacking percentage in all three contests played by the Lancers at the tournament thus far.
As a team the Lancers had 13 total blocks and recorded 39 kills to only 13 errors. Biola on the other hand had 32 kills and 29 errors. The Eagles hit just .028 in the match.
With the win, CBU takes the top spot in Pool F and is guaranteed the No. 5 seed heading into bracket play Friday. The bracket schedule will be released at the conclusion of pool play today. Biola also moves on to Bracket play as the No. 2 team in Pool F.
CBU moves its overall season record to 32-5, while Biola falls to 27-9.
