BOSTON SWEEP PARTY
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --- California Baptist University began its 2011 campaign in an
impressive fashion with a trio of wins, including two over NCAA Division I
teams, Saturday at the MIT Invitational in Cambridge, Mass.
The
Lancers dominated 6-on-5 opportunities all day, scoring 9-of-12 times with a
man advantage and holding their opponents to just 3-for-9 in the same setting
through their first two games.
In
the opener, CBU defeated Brown, 10-6, led by senior driver Chris Toy, who
scored three goals in the game and finished the day with five. After finishing
the first quarter even at two goals apiece, the Lancers never looked back
leading 4-3 at halftime then adding four more goals in the third and two in the
final quarter to stretch the final score to 10-6.
Junior
goalie Austen Ramer finished with 12 saves, four steals and an assist.
Completing
four of five 6-on-5 opportunities, the Lancers' defense held Brown to just one
goal when down a man.
"The
difference in this game was our 6-on-5 opportunities, offensively and
defensively," Head Coach Rick Rowland said. "We converted ours and then did a
good job keeping them out of the net when they had a man advantage. We found our
way after the first half and dominated the second half."
Sophomore
2-meter man Evan Vardayou drew two 5-meter penalties while sophomore 2-meter
man Matt Puig also contributed two of his five goals of the day against Brown.
In
the midday matchup, California Baptist beat Harvard 13-9 in a game of cat and
mouse. After the Lancers jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the Crimson, Harvard
battled back to tie the game at 4-4 at the end of the first quarter and again
at 5-5 at the half. The Lancers took a 9-8 lead at the end of three, and then
ran away with it outscoring Harvard 4-1 in the final eight minutes.
Junior
utility Scott Gleason and freshman Cody Wetherbee were the only two Lancers to
score in all three of today's games. Gleason finished with a team-high eight
goals, including his four against Harvard. Wetherbee contributed one goal in
each game. Against the Crimson, junior utility Keith Jizmejian added three
goals and two assists while senior utilities Peter Hines and Brent Troutman each
added two goals.
Ramer
added another six saves.
A
trio of trios led the Lancers to a 16-4 victory over MIT in the invitational's
nightcap. Puig, Gleason and sophomore utility Danny Mundy each found the back
of the net three times while Vardayou and freshman driver Cameron Custance
contributed two goals apiece.
Freshman
goalkeeper Dylan Vrooman made five saves in his first taste of collegiate play.
The
Lancers travel to Irvine on Thursday, Sept. 8 to face-off against UC Irvine at
7 p.m. before facing USC in Los Angeles next Saturday.
