Lancers Lackluster
SANTA CLARA, Calif. --- The Brown University Bears clawed
their way to a 17-9 victory against California Baptist University at the first
day of the Santa Clara Rodeo.
The Lancers got goals from seven different players, but in
the end even their 70 percent success rate on 6-on-5 opportunities was not good
enough to take down the Bears.
"Tonight, they did whatever they wanted to against us," said
head coach Rick Rowland. "We went up against a very tough Brown team."
The Lancers fell into a hole early in the game as they were
outscored 4-1 in the first quarter. Brown had two players score four or more
goals in the game. CBU's highest scorers, Chris Vanjoff and Cameron Custance,
each had two.
The Bears were able to suppress the normally explosive
Lancers offense thanks to strong, very physical defensive play. One CBU player
even lost a tooth due to the physicality of the game.
"They played really tough," said Rowland. "It was an
extremely physical game."
Despite the flurry of offensive production from Brown, Austen Ramer still managed to add nine saves to his career total, it now sits at
1,016, just nine behind Jon Miller for the most saves in program history.
Miller is currently assistant coach to Rowland.
"Tonight was not one of Ramer's best nights," said Rowland.
"It was not a good night for us at all."
Tomorrow is day two of the Santa Clara Rodeo and CBU will
face No. 17 Bucknell at 9:00 a.m. and No. 19 Santa Clara at 1:00 p.m.
The Lancers are 5-1 in six meetings with Bucknell, and 7-5
against Santa Clara.
"Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for us," said
Rowland.
