SANTA CLARA, Calif. --
California Baptist University opened the Santa Clara Rodeo with a nonconference loss to 14th-ranked Brown Friday night.

The loss brings the No. 19 Lancers to 13-12 on the year, looking to boost their record with two more games Saturday in Santa Clara. The Bears improved to 15-5 on the season, despite CBU receiving two goals each from David Ring and Nick Candau.

For the second day in a row, the Lancers took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Elad Gunya and Candau. Brown answered back at 3-2 and finished the quarter on a 3-2 run before expanding its lead to four at the half, 8-4. Candau and Brent Teraoka both scored in the second frame to keep CBU within striking distance.

The Bears pushed their lead to 10-4 in the third quarter, but the Lancers closed back within four on back-to-back goals from Eric Carnohan and Clint Walling. Brown regained control by ending the frame with a pair of tallies. Seeking a dramatic comeback, CBU opened the fourth quarter on a 3-1 run on scores from Jake Jizmejian and Ring's two goals to pull back within four, 13-9. Brown countered with consecutive scores to hold off the Lancers, despite a Thomas Henline goal with five seconds remaining.

CBU ends the Rodeo with games against No. 12 UC Davis and Bucknell, which is receiving votes in the top-20 polls, at 10:40 a.m. and 2:40 p.m., respectively.
