Gaining Momentum

LOS ANGELES — In its last game before starting conference, California Baptist University kept its momentum going and grabbed a 70-65 win over Cal State L.A. Saturday night.

CBU—which is receiving votes in the NCAA Division II poll—improves to 6-1 before jumping into PacWest play. The Golden Eagles fall to 1-3 overall.

For the second night in a row, Courtney Nelson led the Lancers with a game-high 20 points (5-for-8). Keeping her streak alive, Darsha Burnside grabbed her sixth double-double of the season, posting 15 rebounds on the night with 17 points (8-for-13). Cassidy Mihalko also finished with double-digit scoring, adding 11 points (3-for-5) to CBU's tally.

After CSULA scored the first four points of the night, the score remained close for a majority of the half until CBU went on a 9-0 run to take the lead at 20-15. Nelson sparked the run with a jump shot and another jumper, this time from Olivia Weber, capped the run.

Holding a 30-27 lead at halftime, CBU looked to keep its hot hand offensively and carry over its 52.4 shooting percentage into the second half.

The Golden Eagles wouldn't let the Lancers get too carried away, however, as they took back their lead at 47-45. Burnside posted up under the basket to even the score at 47-47, but a battle commenced for the remaining minutes as neither team could shake the other.

With CSULA in front 53-49, CBU started to make its move before heading down the stretch. The Lancers went on a 7-1 run, initiated by Burnside, to take a two-point lead with just over four minutes to play.

As the Golden Eagles attempted to foul back into the game, the Lancers finished their chances at the charity stripe to walk away with the win, 70-65.

CBU opens PacWest action next week, hosting Dixie State in its first contest on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 5:00 p.m.
