DAVIS, Calif. – California Baptist University continued its trend of strong fourth-quarter play this season, but despite highlight performances from Joseph Moorman and Eric Carnohan, the Lancers fell to Pacific, 16-13, Friday.
The Lancers, who are receiving votes in the NCAA top-20 polls, dropped their first game of the Aggie Shootout after riding a four-game winning streak into the tournament. They move to 8-6 on the season, while the seventh-ranked Tigers improved to 7-3 on the year.
Moorman tied his career high for saves in a game, with 20 in the loss, while Carnohan scored a season-high six goals and Brent Teraoka added a hat trick. Carnohan led CBU's fourth-quarter charge with four goals in the final eight minutes, but it was not enough to overcome an early deficit.
Pacific took a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Lancers won the second quarter on goals from David Ring, Jake Jizmejian and Carnohan to pull within two, 7-5, at halftime. Teraoka scored the first goal of the third frame to bring CBU within a goal, 7-6, but the Tigers ended the quarter on a 5-2 spurt to take a 12-8 lead.
CBU fought over the final eight minutes and came within three scores at 12-9, 13-10 and 14-11 but would not come any closer, ultimately dropping the game 16-13.
The Lancers end the Aggie Shootout with two games Saturday against Occidental and No. 3 Cal at 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively. Â
