GUNNISON, Colo. – California Baptist University split its four duals at Tracey Borrah Saturday, defeating a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and a NCAA Division I opponent.
The Lancers moved to 6-4, 1-1 in conference in the year after a 32-12 win over D-I Grand Canyon and 23-15 victory over the RMAC's Colorado-State Pueblo. CBU also suffered a 33-6 loss to eighth-ranked Western State Colorado and 35-7 loss to Air Force.
Jacob Waste (184 pounds), Christian Smith (174) and Nolan Kistler (157) won three matches for CBU, while Matt Hickman (149) had two victories for the Lancers. After Hickman and Christian Smith were CBU's only two victors against Western State Colorado, six Lancers proved victories in a win over Colorado-State Pueblo.
Christian Betancourt (125) opened the GCU dual with a pin of Jacob Reyes just 35 seconds in. After a CBU forfeit at 133, the Lancers rattled off a 23-0 run with Peter Cunningham (133), Hickman, Kistler, Alec Smith (165), Christian Smith and Waste posting victories to ensure the win. Hickman pinned his opponent and Waste logged a technical over his man, with David Dill (285) defeating his opponent, 7-2, to ensure the win.
Against CSU-Pueblo, Betancourt opened the dual with an 8-2 win over Alex Baca and Cunningham defeated Tim Urenda with a 10-8 decision to put things even at 6-6 through three matches. Kistler defeated Steven Kelly 7-3 before Christian Smith pinned Conner Watanabe at the 3:41 mark to give the Lancers a 17-12 advantage with three matches to go. Victories from Waste (15-0) and Paul Head (7-1) at 184 and 197 delivered the CBU victory.
The Lancers take to the Nebraska-Kearney Duals next weekend, facing off against Lindenwood, Adams State, New Mexico Highlands and Fort Hays State. Â
