HONOLULU, Hawaii — When it comes to the PacWest, no team can be overlooked, even if it sits lower in the standings. California Baptist University learned that lesson Thursday night as it took on Chaminade, grinding out a 68-59 win.
Â
The Lancers improve to 16-3 on the year and 9-2 in conference, while the Silverswords fall to 3-12, 3-8 in the PacWest.
Â
Darsha Burnside, who missed the last game due to illness, was back to her full self and grabbed her 13th double-double of the season with a staggering 24 rebounds paired with 16 points (5-for-10). The junior also added four blocks and two steals on the night.
Â
Cassidy Mihalko and
Kamille Diaz also contributed double figures in the points column, adding 15 and 14 respective points. Mihalko went 6-for-13 from the field, while Diaz was 5-for-11 and dished out four assists.
Â
Surprising for one of the PacWest's top three-point shooting teams, CBU couldn't get good looks from the perimeter and was held to 21.1-percent from three-point range.
Â
After scoring the first two points of the contest on their first possession, the Lancers went on a little bit of a dry spell, not scoring again until three-and-a-half minutes later. CBU regrouped, however, as
Megan Brown sparked a 12-0 run to give the visitors a good 14-2 cushion.
Â
The Silverswords fought back to bring the margin under 10 points, 19-12, but despite its efforts, Chaminade couldn't quite get the ball to fall, walking into halftime down 39-24 to the Lancers.
Â
Chaminade came out firing in the second half and opened with a 6-0 run before
Chanel Cambronero finished two chances at the line. The Silverswords kept pushing and brought things within three points at 48-45 with about 10-and-a-half minutes left to play.
Â
Determined to take back control of the game, CBU settled back into its rhythm and looked to key in on defense.
Courtney Nelson stole the ball away and put Diaz on a fast break to but the Silverswords ended the 4-0 run before CBU could really get rolling and brought the score once again within one possession at 54-51.
Â
Heading down the stretch, CBU didn't have much breathing room with only a three-point lead. Mihalko scored six-straight points to give the Lancers a little room at 61-54, forcing a Chaminade timeout.
Â
A three-point shot from Diaz once again brought CBU in front by double-digits at 66-56, but the Silverswords responded with their own shot from beyond the arc.
Â
The Lancers just needed to close out the last two minutes to walk away with the win. Burnside rattled in two shots at the charity stripe to give the visitors the 68-59 victory.
Â
CBU continues its time in Hawaii, heading to the North Shore Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. PST tip off at BYU-Hawaii. The Lancers conclude the trip at Hawaii Pacific on Monday.
