POMONA, Calif. – For the second and then third games in a row, California Baptist University used a huge run to overcome two opponents, as it reeled off its fourth and fifth-straight wins on Friday.

The Lancers opened the Gary Troyer Tournament at Pomona-Pitzer with victories over La Verne, 16-7, and Whittier, 17-11. The victory over the Poets gives CBU its first victory over a top-20 ranked opponent this season, with Whittier opening the week ranked No. 16 in the NCAA. La Verne is the eighth-ranked team in Division III. The Lancers improved to 7-6 on the year with the victories.

There were two keys to each win. In the opener, the Lancers led by a goal after the first quarter and then scored nine of the next 10 goals against the Leopards for a commanding 14-5 advantage with 7:40 to play. In the finale, a 5-0 run late in the third that carried over into the fourth gave the Lancers their lift. David Ring's play was key against Whittier, as he scored six goals in the victory. Joseph Moorman had double-digit saves in each game, finishing with 29 in all.

Tucker Angelo scored a hat trick and drew two ejections against La Verne, while Brent Teraoka, Spencer Shore and Ring had two goals each and Teraoka added two assists. Tanner Shore had a goal, two assists, a steal and drawn ejection.

Angelo got off to a quick start, with two goals in the first quarter, to give CBU a 5-4 lead through eight minutes. The Lancers rattled off a 5-0 run, with Tanner Shore and Chris "Teddy" Forte scoring in the last two minutes of the first half to give CBU a 7-4 lead at the break.

Ring, Spencer Shore and Angelo continued the run with goals in the first three minutes of the second half, giving the Lancers a 10-4 advantage with 17 minutes to go. La Verne broke the run momentarily with a goal, but Teraoka, Royce Daniel Laverne, Spencer Shore and Ring contributed to a 4-0 run that gave CBU a 14-5 cushion with 7:40 remaining.

In the game with Whittier, both teams were tied 2-2 until Thomas Henline broke it about halfway through the second quarter. Ring then rattled home three-straight scores before halftime to give CBU a 6-2 advantage. The Poets pulled back within a goal, 7-6, but consecutive scores from Ring and Henline made it a three-goal lead again, 9-6. CBU wrapped up its fifth-straight win with a 5-0 run that started late in the third and carried over into the fourth, with Angelo scoring twice in that span.
