Epic Battle

AZUSA, Calif. — The last time these two teams met, California Baptist University walked away with a 20-point victory in Riverside. On its home court, Azusa Pacific looked like a new team and battled the Lancers into overtime, where the Cougars came from behind to take the game 92-84.

CBU falls to 21-5 on the season, 14-4 in the PacWest, while the Cougars improve to 17-9 overall, 13-6 in conference.

Two Lancers had monstrous nights, as Kamille Diaz and Darsha Burnside both finished in the 20-point range. Diaz matched a season-high 29 points on impressive shooting from the perimeter, making 7-of-13 three-point shots. Burnside picked up yet another double-double on the season with 20 points (8-for-16) and 18 rebounds.

Courtney Nelson also finished in double figures, posting 14 points (5-for-13). Chanel Cambronero was a major asset on defense, grabbing four steals in the contest.

APU used some hot shooting to open the contest, jumping in front 21-8 early. The Lancers regrouped and responded with a 10-0 run to get back in the game, now only trailing by three, 21-18. Burnside initiated the run with a layup and two threes from Diaz, along with a jump shot from Cassidy Mihalko kept it going.

The Lancers kept the full-court pressure on and tied the game at 23-23, before holding a brief lead at 26-23. Even again at 31-31, APU closed out the half on a 9-3 run to hold a 40-34 upper hand at halftime.

Coming out of the break, CBU kept fighting, waiting to make its move.

Down by 10 at 61-51, Cambronero got the ball rolling with an old-fashioned three-point play, drawing a foul as she laid in the ball. She then grabbed back-to-back steals, leading to two fast break layups to force an APU timeout.

Back on defense, a Burnside block put CBU back on the attack where Nelson drew a foul. She kept the momentum-building run in favor of the Lancers, finishing two shots at the charity stripe to put the visitors back within one, 61-60.

The Cougars tried to keep the Lancers at an arm's distance, but CBU wouldn't let the home team get back its double-digit lead.

Diaz sank a shot from distance to put her team within five points, 76-71, with 2:31 left to play. The Lancers got a big stop on defense as the Cougars turned over the ball and Diaz put the score back within a possession as she rattled in a free throw and Mihalko drew a foul on the next rebound. Mihalko found nothing but net on both her free throws, putting the score at 76-74 with two minutes on the clock.

Nelson kept it close in the last minute, driving through traffic to make it a one-point game. With less than 30 seconds on the clock, APU made two free throws, but Diaz gave CBU its best shot of the night, sinking a deep three to force overtime, 80-80.

Fired up from the shot, CBU won the tipoff and Nelson rattled in the first points to give the Lancers the first lead of extra time.

APU put the game within one with a free shot and tried to take its first lead of the period, but Burnside denied the attempt with her third block of the night. The Lancers tried to foul back in, but the Cougars made crucial free throws to take the game 92-84.

CBU has one last regular-season contest on the road, heading to Fresno Pacific Thursday night for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff. The Lancers return to the Van Dyne Gym to host Notre Dame de Namur for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff before postseason action begins.
