DAVIS, Calif. – Last year, California Baptist University upset a highly-ranked UC Davis team for arguably its biggest win since becoming apart of the NCAA. The Lancers looked to repeat the feat on the road and in their Western Water Polo Association opener Thursday night, but the No. 10 Aggies were too much to overcome in a 17-10 loss.
Despite a fourth-quarter push, CBU dropped to 2-5, 0-1 in conference on the year, while UC Davis improves to 7-4, 1-0. Six Lancers scored in the contest, including David Ring, who completed his second hat trick in as many games, and Tucker Angelo, who scored multiple times.
Faced with a big deficit from early on, CBU rallied on two occasions to stay in the game. Ring came out firing early and scored two of his team's first three goals, with Angelo sandwiching a score in the middle, to keep the Lancers within 6-3 in the second quarter.
UC Davis kept coming and went into the fourth quarter up seven, 13-6. Ring's hat-trick score and goals from Angelo and Royce Daniel Laverne brought the Lancers within six, 15-9, with about four minutes to play. CBU would get no closer, with Ryan Sargis scoring the team's final goal, making it 16-10, with 30 seconds to play.
CBU, which is receiving votes in the NCAA top-20 polls, turns right around for a clash with fifth-ranked University of the Pacific to kick off the Aggie Shootout Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Shootout concludes with games against Concordia and Diablo Valley College Saturday at 8 a.m. and 2:40 p.m., respectively.
