Into The Blue

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — It wasn't a normal Thursday night, but No. 5 California Baptist University relished in the abnormal to defeat Holy Names 106-50.

The Lancers improve to 14-1 overall, 6-1 in the PacWest, and extend their win streak to seven-straight games. The Hawks — who had to wear CBU's road jerseys since their uniforms were stuck in traffic and weren't going to make it in time — drops to 4-12, 3-5 in conference.

Five Lancers finished the night scoring in double figures, led by Courtney Nelson's 19 points (8-for-11). Cassidy Mihalko was right behind her, scoring 18 points on 5-for-10 shooting, while Kamille Diaz was one point off her with 17 points (6-for-8, 4-for-5 3FG). Emma Meriggioli posted 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting, while Megan Frerer grabbed a double-double with 12 points (5-for-5) and 13 rebounds.

Coming into the game hoping to hone in on their defensive skills, the Lancers started strong and didn't allow an HNU basket until halfway through the first quarter. Meanwhile, CBU had jumped out in front to a 16-0 cushion.

Frerer opened the game with the first points of the night and helped fuel the run with another layup and two free throws. Nelson capped the run with a three-pointer to give her team the commanding 16-0 lead.

Despite HNU cutting the scoring spree briefly, the Lancers kept pushing and held a 25-8 edge after the first period.

After the Hawks drained a shot from the perimeter to cut the margin to 11 points, CBU went off on a 14-0 run to threaten a 30-point lead, 38-11. Mihalko initiated the run by driving to the basket and kept it going by accepting a pass from Diaz, stepping back into three-point range and letting it rip.

Almost a minute and a half later, Mihalko drained another three to put the Lancers in front 36-11. CBU keyed in on defense and forced another turnover, allowing Meriggioli to find Frerer under the basket to give the home team a 27-point lead.

Kristine Sellona gave CBU that 30-point lead it was looking for, grabbing an offensive board and banking it in off the glass. She drew a foul on the play, rounding it up to three. The Hawks brought it back down into the 20-point range, but a three from Mihalko gave CBU a 54-22 upper hand at halftime.

The Lancers kept their offense in gear, climbing into 40-point margin territory as Diaz drained a three from the corner to put CBU up 67-26. They moved into 50-point territory in the fourth quarter, holding a 96-40 cushion at one point.

HNU tried to keep playing, but turnovers plagued the visitors as CBU capitalized on the opportunities to take the 106-50 victory.

CBU turns right around for its final home game of January, hosting rival Azusa Pacific on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. The No. 24-ranked Cougars will be the first ranked team the Lancers faces this year as they look to avenge their only loss of the year, a 74-63 defeat at APU back in December.
