RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A strong third-quarter performance was not enough for 15th-ranked California Baptist University to upset No. 11 UC Davis in the Lancers' Western Water Polo Association opener on Thursday.

CBU gave itself hope of a huge comeback with an impressive third quarter, but the Aggies held on for the 10-4 win at the Lancer Aquatics Center. CBU drops to 9-7, 0-1 in WWPA and UC Davis improves to 12-3, 2-0.

The Lancers received nine saves and two steals from goalie Joseph Moorman. Brent Teraoka logged a goal, assist and steal, while Teddy Forte added a goal and two steals.

UC Davis scored the first six goals of the game before Forte got the Lancers on the board with a no-look backhand shot off a Caleb Rogers assist with 1:12 left in the second quarter. It made it a 6-1 game heading into halftime.

The Aggies scored first in the third quarter to go back up six, 7-1, but the Lancers rattled off the next three goals to go into the fourth just down three, 7-4. Ball movement set up all three goals. Teraoka fed Jonathan Lotero for a two-meter goal, and Luke Schuler cashed in a cross-pool pass from Elad Gunya. Teraoka was the beneficiary of another Gunya assist with 1:17 to play in the third.

UC Davis responded by scoring the final three goals of the game to secure the victory.

CBU will partake in the Gary Troyer Tournament this weekend. It will face La Verne and Chapmanon Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., respectively, at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Lancers end the weekend against Redlands and McKendree Saturday at 10:20 a.m. and 4:10 p.m. at Pomona-Pitzer.
