RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After the 100-yard freestyle, it was all but won for California Baptist University as it opened its home season with a 159-103 dual win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
Â
The 16
th-ranked Lancers in NCAA Division II shutout the Sagehens 19-0 in the 100 free, as they produced the top-five finishers of the event.
Adrien Deloffre touched first in 46.88 seconds, which is exactly one second off the D-II consideration time, while
Alexis Ohmar (47.04),
Bernardo Valentim (47.09),
Christian Britton (48.10) and
David Ring (49.73) went two to five with less than a second separating them.
Â
Another example of CBU's depth and dominance came in the 200 butterfly, as
Justin Quiroga (1:54.76),
Quinn Birtles (1:56.25) and
Chris Sands (1:56.57) placed first to third. Quiroga and
Scott Tolman gave the Lancers the top-two swimmers in the 400 individual medley, with respective times of 4:07.03 and 4:08.28. Â
Â
Zach Parry and
Andrew Rotundo went first and second on the 1 and 3-meter dives. Parry won the 1-meter with 313.88 points, well beyond the automatic qualification mark of 285, while Rotundo was second (220.57). Parry produced 295.45 points, which topped the 295 automatic qualifying figure, for first on the 3-meter, while Rotundo took second (267.60).
Â
"Zach's 11-dive list was just off the pool record on the 1-meter, with a 508.37, the pool record is 515," Dive Coach
Jeff Couto said. "This was the best performance of the season so far. I am very impressed, practice has been good for all our divers."
Â
In the 200 and 1650 frees, CBU churned out the top-two finishers again.
Robert Griffith (16:20.49) and Ohmar (16:27.11) went one-two in the 1650, while Valentim (1:43.27) and Britton (1:44.72) did so in the 200.
Â
Ohmar notched himself an individual win with a time of 4:46.77 in the 500 free, while Griffith (4:48.02) and
Josh Fluetsch (4:50.86) came in third and fourth, respectively, in that event.
Â
So far, it seems like the breaststroke events are a lock for the Lancers when Tolman is in a lane. The true freshman won the 100 breast in 56.09 and then nearly had himself a consideration time in his victorious 200 breast (2:02.70). Reese Gonzalez touched third in the 100 breast (1:00.85) to pile on the points for CBU.
Â
In relay action, Britton, Tolman, Quiroga and Ring then teamed up to take first in the 400-medley (4:01.77). The Lancers took second and third in 200-free relay, with Deloffre, Birtles,
Ashton Lowery and Valentim taking second (1:26.02) and Ohmar, Ring, Fluetsch and Griffith finishing in third (1:27.73).
Â
Despite not getting wins, CBU went deep in the 50 free and 100 fly. The Lancers produced the second to sixth-place swims in the 50 free, thanks to Valentim (21.60), Deloffre (21.70), Lowery (21.82), Ring (22.15) and
Robert Jordan (22.52). Birtles and
Adrian Gutierrez went two-three in the 100 fly, as well, with respective times of 52.55 and 52.65.
Â
Gutierrez turned in two more top-four finishes, going runner-up in the 100 back (55.89) and fourth in the 200 back (2:01.60). Quiroga added to his day with a No. 3 swim in the 200 back (2:00.65).
