Going Long

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 4-ranked California Baptist University matched its second-longest win streak Saturday night, defeating Dominican University of California 80-59.

CBU improves to 22-1 overall, 14-1 in the PacWest, and extends its winning streak to 15-straight games — also set by a Jarrod Olson team during his first year at the helm (2012-13). The longest streak was set back in the 1987-88 season, when the Lancers won 20 consecutive games.

"It was a tough game," said Olson. "There wasn't much flow in the beginning. Dominican is a good team and we are happy to get the win."

Four Lancers finished the night scoring in double figures, led by Cassidy Mihalko with 19 points (6-for-8). Courtney Nelson followed with 16 points, while Kamille Diaz added 15 points. Megan Frerer rounded out the quartet with 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting.

Both Mihalko and Frerer were just one rebound shy of double-doubles, each grabbing nine rebounds on the night.

The Lancers started the game quickly, scoring the first basket just 14 seconds into the contest, but couldn't keep the attack as fast-paced. Dominican slowed down CBU, even taking a couple leads briefly, but the Lancers held an 18-17 edge after the first 10 minutes.

CBU opened the second quarter with an 8-2 run, bookended by two different Lancers at the charity stripe. Nelson started the run and Erin Asher finished it to give the home team a 26-19 cushion.

Dominican cut the margin to five points, but CBU grabbed its first double-digit lead of the night with three minutes before halftime. Burnside posted up under the basket off an assist from Diaz, giving the Lancers a 36-25 lead.

Mihalko knocked down a three just before halftime to give her squad some separation, putting the Lancers up 41-27 at the break.

The Penguins managed to chip away at the margin, bringing themselves within nine, 41-32, but CBU had other ideas. The Lancers went off on an 11-0 run to take their first 20-point lead of the night. Mihalko capped the run with a jump shot, giving CBU a 52-32 lead.

After Dominican cut the margin down again, Nelson spun off her defender to put CBU back in front by 20 just before the third quarter came to a close. Dominican kicked it into another drive, however, going off on a 10-0 run to slice the margin to eight points, 58-50.

Frerer made a free throw to cut the run briefly, but the Penguins brought themselves within seven points, 59-52, with just over seven minutes to play.

Dominican turned on the high press, but Mihalko grabbed a steal to allow Diaz to sink a shot from the corner. It was déjà vu just seconds later as the same play went down, giving CBU a 67-52 lead. Diaz kept the 13-0 run going as she hit yet another shot from the perimeter before assisting Nelson's jump shot, 72-52.

"Cass made some big defensive plays in the fourth quarter that led to some big shots from Kamille," said Olson.

The Lancers kept the Penguins from battling back in it, taking the game 80-59.

CBU concludes its regular-season home schedule on Monday, hosting Concordia (Calif.). Frerer and Darsha Burnside will be honored prior to tip off at 5:00 p.m.
