RIVERSIDE, Calif. — For the third time in a row, both California Baptist University's basketball teams will compete in the PacWest Conference Championships.Â
Â
The PacWest Basketball Championships takes place March 3-5, 2016, at CU Arena on the campus of Concordia University of Irvine. The quarterfinals begin on Thursday, followed by the semifinals on Friday and finals on Saturday.
Â
For the first time, the schedule will alternate between men's and women's games in the first two rounds. Tickets are available for
purchase online now, with single-game tickets for $12 and all-tournament passes for $29.
Online purchases are the only way to pay with credit/debit card, cash only at the event. Children 12-and-under receive free admission, while CBU students with valid CBU IDs also get free admission via the Lancer marketing table.
Â
CBU's No. 24-ranked men picked up the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will face Dominican University of California on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. The winner moves on to face No. 2 seed Dixie State on Friday, also 12:30 p.m.
Â
Last time the Lancers and Penguins met, it came down to the final seconds as
Gelaun Wheelwright hit two free throws to give CBU the 89-88 victory. The Lancers are 11-3 against Dominican in the all-time series and currently riding a two-game winning streak.
Â
CBU finished the regular season 24-6 and tied for first place in the PacWest with a 15-5 conference mark. The Lancers picked up the third seed after the tie-breaking scenarios played out, with Azusa Pacific grabbing the top seed.
Â
On the women's side, No. 4-ranked CBU will have to wait and see where it sits in Wednesday's regional poll to find out if it is the No. 1 or No. 2 seed. The Lancers have a first-round bye and depending on which side of the bracket they are placed in Wednesday, they would face any of four teams. As the No. 1 seed, CBU would take on the winner of No. 4 Hawaii Pacific and No. 5 Dominican; as the No. 2 seed, the Lancers would face the winner of No. 3 Academy of Art and No. 6 Point Loma.
Â
The Lancers finished the regular season tied for first in the PacWest to share the conference crown with No. 19 Azusa Pacific. Since the two teams gave each other their only PacWest losses, the tie-breaker comes down to the how the regional rankings play out on Wednesday. In the first NCAA Division II West Region standings, APU sat in third, while the Lancers took fourth.
