LA JOLLA, Calif. – A top-20 matchup between NCAA Division II rivals awaited No. 15 California Baptist University in its final dual of the season at fifth-ranked UC San Diego on Saturday.
A 1-2-3 sweep on both diving boards and three top-two finishes from true freshman
Scott Tolman highlighted the Lancers' day in a 167-129 loss to the Tritons at UC San Diego. CBU ends the regular season with a 4-5 dual meet record and begins its postseason on Feb. 8
th at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships at Colorado Mesa.
Zach Parry won both boards, with 329.10 points on the 3-meter board and 296.35 at the one-meter.
Andrew Rotundo took second place on the 3 (287.92) and 1 (245.32), while
Garret Chew amassed 266.92 and 202.32 points on the 3 and 1-meter events, respectively.
"I couldn't be more proud of how the team finished the regular season," Dive Coach
Jeff Couto said. "Anytime you can go 1-2-3 in an event is impressive. The divers are diving confidently and ready for the RMAC Championships."
Tolman turned in a full day's work by winning both the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes, with respective times of 57.03 seconds and 2:03.44. The freshman was not done yet, though, and ended his meet with a runner-up mark of 4:08.03 in the 400 individual medley.
Robert Griffith provided the Lancers with their fifth win of the dual in the 1650 freestyle, which was also CBU's deepest race of the day. Griffith touched first in 16:15.74, but
Tanner Shore (16:41.59),
Josh Fluetsch (16:41.86),
Sakeri Holter (17:16.44) and
Luke Schuler (18:31.29) weren't from off from third to sixth place.
Saturday's other distance event, the 500 free, was another highlight for CBU. Griffith and Shore finished two and three in 4:43.91 and 4:46.11, respectively, while
Brandon Schuster was fourth in 4:46.88. Schuster also took third in the 400 IM (4:08.88). Â
The Lancers produced multiple top-five swimmers in the 200 backstroke and 200 free, as well.
Robert Jordan led CBU in the 200 back, with a second-place time of 2:02.46, while
Adrian Gutierrez (2:04.75),
Riley Forristel (2:10.89) and Holter (2:15.18) followed from third to fifth.
Quiroga was the runner-up in the 200 free (1:41.75), while
Bernardo Valentim (1:44.01) and
Adrien Deloffre (1:44.01) were a respective fourth and fifth.
Alexis Ohmar provided two medal performances for CBU by taking second in the 100 free (47.33) and third in the 100 back (54.11).
Quinn Birtles also took second in the 200 butterfly (1:54.34). Gutierrez wound up in third in both the 100 (51.42) and 200 butterflies (1:56.04).
Deloffre,
David Ring, Valentim and Ohmar rounded out the dual with a second-place swim in the 400-free relay (1:25.61).
