GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Less than a month away from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, California Baptist University tested where it stood against one of its top-conference foes in a trip to 23
rd-ranked Colorado Mesa.
Wins wise, it was split evenly with the each side securing five individual victories. The Mavericks came away with more bonus-point wins, however, for a 20-17 upset over the ninth-ranked Lancers.

Jacob Waste,
Paul Head,
Donovin Guerrero and
Peter Cunningham all won their bouts for CBU.
The Lancers are now 2-5 in duals this season and 0-1 in conference, while CMU improves to 2-0 overall and in conference. CBU continues a busy week with portions of the team competing at the Menlo Open and the other at the Tracy Borah Duals, which includes matchups against New Mexico Highlands, Air Force, Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota State, on Saturday.
After dropping the first match of the dual at 174 pounds, the Lancers won five of the next six bouts to take a 17-6 advantage. Fiegener got the rally started with a strong start and finish for an overtime win over Austin Gaun at 184 pounds.
Fiegener won the first period 4-1, but was called for stalling early. Another two points, including another stall in the third, helped Gaun force overtime, but Fiegner closed out the victory with a takedown in extra time for the sudden-death win.
Waste broke the 3-3 tie with a 13-3 major over Adam Visconti at 197 pounds. Waste scored first with a takedown in the opening period and then build his lead up to 7-1 going into the third period, where he tallied six more points.
At heavyweight, Head gave CBU consecutive major wins with a 14-5 decision over Clayton Voytilla. He scored six of his points in the final period after producing the first points of the match with a quick takedown. Â
Guerrero made his collegiate debut at 133 pounds and impressed with an 8-6 decision against Michael McDanial. The true freshman took a 4-1 lead with two takedowns in the first, and kept his lead intact with an escape and reversal in the final two minutes.
Cunningham finished off the dominant run from CBU with an 8-5 win over Brett Kasprzyk at 141.
