U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Down two with two minutes to play, California Baptist University fought back to force overtime on the road at Air Force and then pulled out the 15-14 victory in extra time on Saturday.
Overtime goals from
Kyle Christian,
Dominick Nevarez and
Tanner Shore secured the Western Water Polo Association victory over the Falcons. The 17
th-ranked Lancers improve to 19-12, 3-3 in conference with one regular-season game left to play at Concordia University of Irvine on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Air Force drops to 5-13, 1-4 this season.
CBU can secure itself the No. 3 seed, which would be a program best, for the WWPA Championships with a win over the Eagles on Thursday. A much improved Concordia team brings a 9-9, 3-2 record into the matchup.
Jonny Lotero and
Thomas Henline helped send the game into overtime with goals in the final minute, 46 seconds of regulation. The Falcons took a 12-10 advantage with 2:09 to play, but could not stop the Lancers on the ensuing possession, as Lotero powered home a goal off a
Christian Britton pass just 23 seconds later.
A pair of offensive fouls from Air Force kept CBU within shooting distance. Nevarez drew an exclusion with less than a minute to go and Henline scored the powerplay goal to tie things at 12-12 with 48 seconds left. Henline kept it tied with a steal on Air Force the next trip down the pool.
Christian got CBU on the board first in overtime after another Henline steal. Â The Falcons evened the score momentarily, but Nevarez found the back of the cage off a pass from
Luke Schuler to make it 14-13 Lancers at the end of the first overtime period. Shore won the opening sprint of the second overtime and then scored 13 seconds later to give the Lancers a precious two-goal lead.
Air Force managed to fight back within a goal, 15-14, with 1:33 to play, but a field block from Henline and steal from Christian kept the Falcons from ever getting another shot on goal.
Christian notched six points in the win, with two goals and four assists, while Lotero and Nevarez (one assist) each scored hat tricks. Shore scored twice and assisted on two more goals for a final tally of four points and a steal. Fresh off Senior Day, Henline finished with a goal, two steals and two assists in the game, as he did much of his work late in the contest.
CBU started the game on a 3-1 run on goals from Shore, Lotero and
Kyle Johnson. The Falcons would battle back and take an 8-6 lead at halftime, though.
Matt Miller played the second half in the cage and put up nine saves and a steal in 22 minutes of action.
