Ram Runs Wild

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A career night from Lexy Ram kept California Baptist University in it to win it in the team's third game in four days versus Simon Fraser.

Unfortunately, the Clan overcame Ram's highlight reel performance and secured the 78-68 victory on Monday night in the CBU Events Center. The Lancers drop to 1-2 and Simon Fraser improves to 2-1, with CBU getting a chance at revenge on SFU's home floor on Saturday at noon.

Ram scored a career-high 25 points and pulled down six rebounds, forced three steals and made three assists in the game. Tori Mitchell also recorded her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Ane Olaeta gave the Lancers three players in double figures, with 13 points, six assists and four rebounds.

It was a tightly-contested game in the first half, with five ties and 10 lead changes in the opening 20 minutes. The Lancers closed the first quarter on a 5-1 run. Ram cashed in a layup with 1:32 left and then Emily Schmidt nailed a three-pointer off an Emma Meriggioli pass three seconds before the quarter ended to give CBU a 17-15 edge.

A three from Meriggioli off an Olaeta assist upped CBU's lead to 20-15 in the second quarter, but Simon Fraser would come back and take a 35-34 lead with a minute and a half left before halftime. Once again, the Lancers closed out strong, with an 8-0 charge on a three-pointer from Akayla Hackson and two Ram jumpers, including a three in the final 15 seconds, to take a 42-35 lead at the break.

The Lancers shot 45.9 percent (17-37) from the field and made eight of 16 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes. It was a balanced attack, with Ram scoring 15 of her points in the first half, hitting three of four three-pointers. Olaeta scored nine and logged three assists and a steal in the first half, while Hackson and Mitchell each had six points in the early going.

An old-fashioned three-point play from Ram gave CBU its largest lead of the game, 49-41, about halfway through the third quarter. That's when the Clan made their move and created a 51-51 tie going into the fourth. Simon Fraser kept up the momentum and won the final quarter to take the victory.
