Comeback Falls Short

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – For the fourth game in a row, Tori Mitchell scored in double figures and recorded her second double-double of the season. It helped California Baptist University launch a comeback on the road at Cal State San Bernardino, but it fell just short in a 58-50 loss on Tuesday.

Mitchell nearly tallied half of the Lancers' points with 24 on 11-for-17 shooting in 29 minutes, while also grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking three shots. The Lancers are 1-4 this season, while the Coyotes are 3-1.

CBU heads to Point Loma's Thanksgiving Classic this weekend, as it faces Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles on Friday and Saturday, respectively, at noon.

With Mitchell controlling the paint, Emma Meriggioli gave CBU a dangerous inside-out attack with 12 points, as she hit four of six three-pointers and also finished with four rebounds and four assists. Lexy Ram added eight points and six rebounds for the Lancers.

In the first quarter and first half, Mitchell poured in half or more of CBU's points. She scored six of the Lancers' 12 in the first 10 minutes and added 10 more points in the second quarter to give her 16 of the CBU's 26.

Still, Cal State San Bernardino took a 27-14 lead halfway through the second quarter. CBU closed out the quarter on a 12-6 run to cut its deficit to seven, 33-26, by halftime. Mitchell sparked the run with two-straight jumpers and added two more field goals, scoring eight of the points in the run.

Mitchell kept the run going with a made jumper 34 seconds into the third quarter and Ram connected on a three off a Meriggioli pass to cut the CSUSB lead down to 33-31 about three minutes in. A layup from Ane Olaeta made it a 39-35 San Bernardino lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Lancers never let the game get out of reach and fought within two points three times in the fourth quarter. They would come no closer, as an 8-1 run put the Coyotes up 53-44 with less than a minute left.
