RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Another doubleheader brought two more offensive battles on the final day of California Baptist University's home series with Northwest Nazarene.
Time after time, the Lancers' bats blocked the Crusaders from gaining any momentum in 13-10 and 6-4 wins on Thursday at Totman Stadium. It gave CBU the series sweep, as it out hit NNU 26-20 over both games to improve to 7-3 by winning their seventh-straight game, while the Crusaders drop to 2-6.
"It was our plan coming into this series, every time they put up a run we put up two more," freshman first baseman
John Glenn said. "Coach [Gary] Adcock really emphasizes how being a CBU baseball player, we come back, stay in the game and battle hard. We've incorporated that and it's really worked out well for us."
Bryce Macy led the Lancers with a five-for-nine showing at the plate, adding three runs batted in, two runs scored and a home run for a .889 slugging percentage on the day.
Tyler Johnson (four-for-seven) and
Tommy Bell (four-for-nine, three RBIs) each had four-hit days and a home run, while
Luke Navigato (three-for-six, three RBIs) and DJ Porter (three-for-eight) each collected three hits.Â
"The offense has really been coming around and hitting the ball this series," Navigato said. "We are getting good pitches to hit and sticking with our preparation."
Next week, CBU heads to Colorado Mesa for a top-10 NCAA Division II showdown starting Thursday at 1:30 PDT. The Lancers are currently ranked eighth and the Mavericks 10th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
There were four ties in Thursday's first game, with NNU rallying back from a five-run deficit to force a 10-10 tie in the top of the eighth. CBU never panicked and responded each time the Crusaders attempted to rally, using a total of four home runs to win the game.
Macy led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run and a two-out
Andrew Bash double into left field scored two runs to cap the scoring for the Lancers at 13-10.
Andrew Bernstein earned the win after pitching the final two innings, including a 1-2-3 ninth.
To start the game, CBU took the 1-0 lead when Johnson started the bottom of the first with a solo shot over the right-field fence. Northwest Nazarene countered to take a 2-1 lead with runs in the third and fourth, but a two-run bomb from
Ryan Williams put the Lancers back in front, 3-2, in the fourth.
NNU scratched out two more runs in the fifth for a 5-3 advantage, but Porter made it a one-run game with an RBI single in the bottom half. The Lancers exploded for six runs on five hits, including an RBI double from Johnson, two-run single from Macy, two-run bomb from Bell and a Navigato RBI single.
In the finale, CBU rushed out to a 2-0 lead on RBI singles from Glenn and
Alfredo Rodriguez. The Crusaders managed to take a 3-2 lead with a trio of runs in the fifth, but the Lancers scored three more runs over the next two innings to grab a 6-3 cushion.
"We have been focusing on hitting: two-strike approach, runner on second base and getting the guy in, in practice," Glenn said. "We really executed this series."
Bell and Navigato drove in one and two runs, respectively, with singles in the fifth, and a Bell single in the sixth allowed another run to score. In his third appearance of the series,
Brody Robinson secured his second save of the season in the seventh inning.
Two true freshmen held NNU scoreless.
Logan Rinehart started his second game in four days and blanked the Crusaders over the first two innings, while
Matt Amrhein threw a scoreless sixth inning of relief in his CBU debut.
