RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Twenty games into the season, California Baptist University has shown it can win in a variety of ways and added another example in a 3-2 PacWest win over Hawai'i Pacific on Friday night.
Pitching, from the starter to the closer, guided the 23
rd-ranked Lancers to victory on a night where they were out hit, 5-3. CBU scored three runs in the first inning to get to the Sharks' ace and it was enough, with
Travis Booth getting the start on the mound and
Brody Robinson closing it out for the two-inning save.
With a series-ending doubleheader coming up Saturday at noon at Totman Stadium, the Lancers won their fourth-straight to improve to 14-6, 5-1 in conference and HPU drops its sixth in a row to slide to 11-9, 1-7.
Booth made his first start of the season and went seven full innings, allowing just two runs on three hits, three walks and struck out three on 96 pitches. Robinson earned his fourth save of the season by allowing just two hits and striking out one over the final two innings.
It was a nightmare first inning for the Sharks, as they committed three of their four errors in the frame, to help CBU score three runs right away.
Luke Navigato started the inning with a single up the middle and an error put two runners on with no outs.
Ryan Williams singled into center field on the next play, and a gaffe in the outfield allowed two Lancers to score and put Williams on third. A wild pitch brought Williams home to give CBU a 3-0 lead.
Hawai'i Pacific clawed back into the game and pulled within a run with a two-run third inning. The Sharks threatened to force extra innings and put the tying run on base with a leadoff single in the ninth, but the Lancers' defense turned in several impressive plays to keep their team in front.
The last of which came when third baseman
Andrew Bash fielded a slow roller and fired a perfect, laser throw to catch the runner just in time, end the game and strand an HPU runner at second base.
