SAN DIEGO – Like it was all series, California Baptist University and Point Loma found themselves locked up in a tight doubleheader on Saturday.
Point Loma won both games 11-10 and 3-0 to split the PacWest series with the 27
th-ranked Lancers. CBU moved to 22-12, 13-7 at the end of the week, while the Sea Lions improved to 18-10, 10-6. Â
It was a wild game one, with the Lancers coming back from a two-run deficit to put some pressure on the Sea Lions in the top of the ninth inning. Point Loma answered back and won the game on a walk off.
In game two, the Sea Lions used two solo home runs to help secure the victory.
CBU put itself in position to complete the dramatic comeback by getting its first five batters on in the top of the ninth of Saturday's opener.
Bryce Macy led things off with a single, while
Ryan Williams and DJ Porter reached on a walk and hit by pitch, respectively.
John Glenn and
Andrew Bash tied the game with one-run singles, while
Brian Ruhm gave CBU the lead, 10-9, with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Sea Lions kept coming, though, and led off the bottom of the ninth with a triple, while a double and error followed to secure the 11-10 victory. Â
Just like it finished, the Lancers started the day hot at the plate and started the game with three-straight hits.
Zack Norris and
Luke Navigato started things off with singles and Macy drove both in with a double, while Glenn capped the first-inning scoring with a two-out single.
Point Loma scored twice in the bottom of the first to make it a 3-2 game, but the Lancers answered back with a four-run second. Ruhm started the frame with a home run, and three walks loaded the bases with one out. A fourth walk to Williams brought in a run and DJ Porter plated two more run with a single to left field to make it 7-2. The Sea Lions settled down and scored the next seven runs to take the 9-7 lead.
Norris, Macy and Glenn all had two hits in game one, while Porter and Plaia provided CBU's two hits in the finale. Despite the loss, Bash threw a six-inning complete game to end the week. He allowed seven hits, three runs, no walks and was efficient, with just 73 pitches.
Next week, the Lancers head to Holy Names for four more PacWest games. The series begins Thursday at 6 p.m., with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday coming before the series finale Saturday at noon.
