RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A large advantage in rebounds and double-digit points from both Ane Olaeta and Blaysen Varnadoe highlighted California Baptist University's performance in its first game against a top-25 ranked opponent this season on Saturday.Â
Olaeta scored a team-high 12 points and Varnadoe added seven rebounds and 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting, but the Lancers could not overcome their 18th-ranked, PacWest-rival Azusa Pacific in a 77-55 loss in the CBU Events Center. CBU did manage to post a 50-38 edge rebounding, as nine Lancers had at least three and six had a minimum of five.
The Lancers drop to 8-8, 5-3 in conference and the Cougars run their PacWest-best record to 17-2, 8-1. CBU turns around to host Hawai'i Pacific on Monday at 5 p.m.Â
While Olaeta and Varnadoe led the way, there were a total of four Lancers with at least eight points, as Georgia Dale scored nine and Lexy Ram added eight.
Emily Schmidt and Tori Mitchell tied for a CBU-high eight rebounds, while Olaeta, Ram and Akayla Hackson (five points, two steals) each had five, as the Lancers out rebounded Azusa Pacific 50-38.Â
