SANTA CLARA, Calif. —
California Baptist University defended its No. 15 ranking with an 11-10 win over 16th-ranked Brown on Friday.

Tommy Lotero preserved the one-goal win for CBU with 17 saves, including two on penalty shots, in the game. Dominick Nevarez and Zach Lowery led the offense with three goals each, while Nevarez added four assists and Lowery had one of his own.

The Lancers never trailed in the game Friday and responded to each of Brown's comeback attempts in the fourth quarter, despite losing two starters to three ejections in the game.

"We want to play high-caliber teams, and every fourth quarter where we are in one-goal games is going to help us in the WWPA," Coach Kevin Rosa said. "The guys maintained their composure today. We didn't get caught up in the emotional swings. We were under control and played our game."

CBU improves to 15-9 this season with the win, while a Brown team that has pulled off two top-10 wins this season moves to 12-10 on the year. The Lancers continue a difficult slate of games at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, facing No. 14 Bucknell and No. 20 Wagner on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 2:20 p.m., respectively.

Two goals from Nevarez and one from Logan Mena staked CBU out to a 3-0 lead about two minutes into the game. Brown came back and forced a 4-4 tie with one minute, 15 seconds left in the first quarter, but Lowery made it 6-4 Lancers about a 1:30 into the second quarter with consecutive goals.

"Dom got us out to a good start and after that, they keyed in on him, but he did a good job of finding other people who did good things for us," Rosa said.

CBU locked up the Bears defensively the rest of the way, giving up just six goals over the final 25-plus minutes. Lotero came up big for the Lancers all game and had one of his penalty-shot blocks in the final 4:16 of the contest to keep his team in front.

"They kept coming, but it was nice to respond the way we did," Rosa said. "If we are going to play well and be a good team, we are going to need Tommy to step up and do that for us. He bailed us out and blocked two penalty shots, which is huge in a one-goal game."

Brown managed to pull within a goal again on several occasions. The Lancers' lead was cut to 10-9 with 4:01 to play in regulation, but Nevarez scored his final goal to give his team a two-goal edge with 2:24 remaining. The Bears scored its final goal with 1:20 to play, but would not come any closer, as CBU secured the victory.
