FRESNO, Calif. –
A quick start and impressive game in goal from Gabe Thorne was not enough to fuel California Baptist University to a win in the Western Water Polo Association fifth-place game versus 17th-ranked Santa Clara on Saturday.

The 11th-ranked Lancers scored the first three goals of the game and received 15 saves and a steal from Thorne, but ultimately fell to the Broncos on a score of 10-7. CBU ends the season with a 22-12 record, while Santa Clara ends at 11-14.

CBU held a 3-0 lead with 3:41 to play in the second quarter after goals from Christian Britton, Ryan Sargis and Nick Johnson. PJ McDonough made it 4-1 Lancers with a goal at the 2:18 mark before the Broncos made it 4-2 by halftime.

Santa Clara cut its deficit down to one, 4-3, with 5:19 left in the third quarter. Hunter Barnett gave the Lancers a two-goal edge with a goal, and the Lancers took a 7-4 lead into the fourth quarter after McDonough's second goal and another from Dominick Nevarez.
