RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Three weeks into the season, California Baptist University has shown it cannot be counted out of any game. The Lancers emphasized that again on Friday when they overcame a four-run deficit against third-ranked Colorado Mesa for their second walk-off win, 8-7, in a week.
Colorado Mesa came back and got the 5-1 win in the nightcap to split the doubleheader on Friday night at Totman Stadium.
Luke Navigato batted .556 on the day (5-for-9) for CBU, which also received four hits each from
Bryce Macy and
John Glenn. The sixth-ranked Lancers are 6-3 and the Mavericks 8-3 going into Saturday's series finale at noon.
Navigato capped off a tremendous game with a walk-off, bloop single into center field to give CBU the win in Friday's first game. The Lancers overcame a 7-5 deficit in the eighth inning to win it against the Mavericks.
CBU's comeback started in the bottom of the eighth when
Harrison Spohn led things off with a double to the gap in left center. Navigato chased him home with a single into center field to bring the score to 7-6. A leadoff walk to
Tommy Bell started the ninth inning and a Glenn single continued the threat.
Ryan Mota tied the game with an RBI single up the middle and then Spohn sacrifice bunted both runners into scoring position. Navigato then delivered the game winner when he dropped a ball onto the outfield grass between CMU's shortstop, center and left fielders.
The Mavericks were in position to take a two-game lead in the series, with a 5-1 lead through five innings. Navigato notched CBU's first run with a solo homer in the fourth and then the Lancers scored four more runs in the sixth to tie the game.
Glenn started the sixth with a home run to right field and one-out singles from Spohn and Navigato kept the threat alive. DJ Porter came on as a pinch hitter and singled into left field, but the CMU fielder misplayed the ball on a bounce and it rolled all the way to the fence. All three Lancers came around to score to tie things at 5-5.
Overall, Navigato was 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the opening game. Spohn was also 3-for-4 with two runs and the double, while Macy and Glenn (two runs) were both 2-for-5 in the game.
CBU avoided the shutout in Friday's finale when Mota hit a solo homer to left field to start the ninth. A Navigato single and hit by pitch to Macy made things interesting with two on and one out in the ninth, but a double-play ball ended the game for CMU.
Ryan Williams and Bell nearly homered earlier in the game, but a cold, damp night at Totman Stadium kept the ball in the park. Glenn and Macy both collected two hits in the game, while
Bryan Pope made his CBU debut in the eighth inning Friday night. Pope threw two scoreless innings on the mound where he allowed just one hit and struck out a Maverick.
