Lancers Split With Sharks

WAIPAHU, Hawaii – After two blowout victories to start the set, California Baptist University had to fight for everything it got in the second half of its PacWest series at Hawaii Pacific.

Despite a big game from Ryan Mota, the Sharks managed to salvage a series split with a 4-3 win on Monday night at Hans L'Orange Park. The 15th-ranked Lancers move to 13-5, 6-2 in the PacWest and the Sharks improve to 11-9, 5-7. CBU hops over an island for four games at Hawaii Hilo, with the series opener Thursday at 9 p.m. PDT.

Ryan Mota drove in all three of the Lancers' runs with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate that included a solo homer and two-run double. Andrew Bash (2-for-4) and Tommy Bell (2-for-5) also added two hits for CBU. Logan Rinehart threw the first 6.2 innings on the mound and allowed just three hits, two earned runs and struck out seven.

Both offenses came out quiet, but the Lancers broke the scoring drought in the top of the fourth inning after consecutive singles from Bash and Bell. A full-count walk to Bryce Macy loaded the bases with one out and Mota plated two with a double passed a diving third baseman.

The Sharks pulled back within a run after scoring in the bottom half of the inning, but Mota reinstated the two-run lead, 3-1, with a solo homer to left field in the sixth.

Hawaii Pacific would answer once again, with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2. It could have been worse, though, as the Sharks got two runners in scoring position with one out. Angelo Capolupo made the last two outs of the inning at short, though, to keep CBU in front.

Capolupo's first play was web-gem worthy, as he made a diving stop on a hard hit ball headed into left field. He looked the runner back at third and then fired to first base, with John Glenn scooping the ball out of the dirt for the second out. The final out of the inning came with Capolupo going up the middle, turning and throwing to first for the third out, which elicited big cheers from the Lancer dugout.

The Sharks kept coming and eventually tied the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the seventh, but Bell threw out the go-ahead run at the plate from left field to limit the damage. HPU did finally take a lead in the eighth and then held on in the ninth for the win.
