WAIPAHU, Hawaii – There is little room for a misstep in what is shaping up to be a very competitive PacWest Conference this season, so California Baptist University was determined to start its first road trip of the 2018 season on the right foot.
An 18-2 win over Hawaii Pacific at Hans L'Orange Park provided just that on Thursday night. The Lancers improve to 12-3, 4-0 in the PacWest to remain the only undefeated team in the conference, while the Sharks slide to 9-8, 3-6. Both teams continue their series with a doubleheader set for a 4 p.m. PDT start time Saturday and then play the series finale Monday at 9 p.m.
John Glenn and
Angelo Capolupo both logged three hits in the win for CBU. Glenn was 3-for-6 with five runs batted in, two doubles and two runs scored. Capolupo went 3-for-5 with three runs, two RBIs and a triple.
Andrew Bash,
Tommy Bell, DJ Porter and
Ryan Mota all had two hits for the Lancers.
CBU scored the first run of the game in the second inning, which was led off by a Mota double and bunt single from
Ryan Williams. A passed ball would then allow Mota to score. Victory seemed imminent when the Lancers struck for six more and forced Hawaii Pacific to go to the bullpen in the third inning.
A leadoff homer from Bash doubled the Lancers' lead to 2-0 in the third. Bell doubled and then three walks – the final to
Harrison Spohn – pushed across another run. Capolupo singled in another runner and then Glenn cleared the bases with a double to left to make it 7-0 going into the bottom of the third.
Capolupo started the fifth inning with a triple and then scored on a
Luke Navigato sacrifice fly to increase the cushion to 8-0. Four hits and four errors lead to seven more CBU runs and a 15-0 cushion going in the sixth. Navigato (two runs), Capolupo, Glenn and Porter all had RBI singles in the inning.
Dylan Stowell struck out nine through 6.1 innings on the mound before the Sharks scored their first runs of the game in the seventh to make it 15-2 going into the eighth after
Brody Robinson left the bases loaded with Sharks on a strikeout.
A two-out walk and hit by pitch led to another RBI single from Porter scored the 16
th run and Glenn scored the last two with a two-run double in the ninth.
