Bombs Away in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. -- Five home runs and a 10-run third inning helped California Baptist University breeze past Fresno Pacific in its PacWest series opener at FPU Diamond on Thursday night.

It started out tight, with both teams trading runs in the first inning, but that was a distant memory after the 24th-ranked Lancers in NCAA Division II scored 10 runs in the third en route to a 16-4 victory. CBU improves to 22-13, 15-10 in the conference and FPU drops to 15-16, 12-13, with the series continuing with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday.

Luke Navigato and Ryan Williams both homered two times in CBU's lopsided win, while Ryan Mota added another. Navigato -- the reigning PacWest Player of the Week -- went 3-for-5 with five runs batted in and three more scored and Williams was 2-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored.

Angelo Capolupo also went 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored, while Tommy Bell was 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and run, as well.

Those five homers are the most in a single game since CBU hit six in its NCAA Division II West Regional opener, a 14-0 win over Cal State East Bay on May 19th, 2016.

The Lancers received some quality pitching performances, as well. Bryan Pope came out of the bullpen to throw the sixth and seventh innings on the mound. He gave up two walks, one hit and no runs while striking out two. Brody Robinson also struck out three batters and allowed a walk and hit in the eighth. Austin Johnson then threw a scoreless ninth inning.

Naviato led off with a home run on the first pitch of the game on Thursday to put CBU on top right away. The Sunbirds came back and tied the game with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

The Lancers blew the game wide open when they sent 15 players to the plate and scored 10 runs in the third. Capolupo led the inning off with a double and then Navigato drove him in with a single to left.

A walk to John Glenn and a Bell single loaded the bases before the second out. An error scored two more runs before Williams cleared the bases with a three-run homer. Consecutive walks to Bryce Macy and Capolupo led to another three-run bomb from Navigato. Two more walks and then an RBI double from Bell capped the scoring in the frame for CBU.

The hits kept on coming for the Lancers when Williams hit his second home run of the game in the fourth to make it 12-1. A leadoff walk to DJ Porter in the sixth fed into RBI singles from Capolupo and Glenn in the inning that made it 14-4 after FPU pushed three runs across in the fifth.

A run came home for the Lancers in the seventh and ninth innings. Mota hit a solo homer in the seventh for the 15th run and then a leadoff walk to Nick Plaia and pinch-hit single from Cole Cooper set the table, while Rory Smith drove in the final run of the game with a two-out double.
