CBU Earns Fifth Seed for Regional

| By:
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — There was a bit of déjà vu for California Baptist University during the NCAA Division II Playoff Selection Show on Sunday night.

For the second year in a row, the Lancers drew the fifth seed and will play the second seed, host and PacWest-conference rival Azusa Pacific on Thursday at a time to be determined. It will be the third time in four years CBU and APU will face each other in the playoffs.

It kept CBU's perfect record of Division II playoff berths alive, as the 18th-ranked Lancers nab their fifth-straight playoff spot as a D-II member before beginning their transition to Division I in 2019. They are also the only D-II West Region team to make the NCAA playoffs in each of the last five years.

This year's six West Regional berths were divided evenly between the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and the PacWest. The CCAA qualified Cal State Monterey Bay, UC San Diego and Chico State as the one, three and six seeds, while the PacWest has APU, Point Loma and CBU as the respective second, fourth and five seeds.

Thursday's matchups will be Cal State Monterey Bay and Chico State and UCSD and PLNU. The West Region champion will advance to the NCAA Division II Championships, which will be played out May 26th to June 2nd at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

CBU amassed a 33-17 overall, 26-14 in PacWest record in the regular season to take third in the conference. The Lancers won 15 of their last 19 games to push their way into the playoffs. Overall, this is the 14th time in Coach Gary Adcock's 15 season the Lancers have qualified for the postseason.

The Lancers defeated the Cougars in three of four games in the regular-season series this year. CBU rebounded from a loss to open the series with three-straight wins by a combined score of 33-6.
