WOODLAND, Calif. – Fourth-quarter domination led California Baptist University to its second top-20 win of the weekend at the Aggie Shootout. The 18
th-ranked Lancers bounced back from a 12-11 loss in the morning with an 8-7 win over No. 17 San Jose State on Saturday afternoon.
The one-goal victory over the Spartans is CBU's 19
th win over a ranked NCAA team since it became an official member in 2013.
Christian Britton scored both of his goals in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner with one minute, 39 seconds to play. Britton's final goal capped a 3-0, game-ending run over the final five and-a-half minutes of the game at the Woodland Swim Center.
Another comeback fell just short in the loss to Whittier earlier on Saturday. The Poets improved to 2-4 on the year, while San Jose State moves to 1-2. The Lancers maintain a 6-6 record going into their home opener next week against eighth-ranked UC Davis on Saturday at noon. CBU will then make a short drive over to Redlands for a 7 p.m. game the same day.
CBU's resiliency was tested again Saturday afternoon when San Jose State scored three of the first four goals for a 3-1 lead with 6:30 left in the first half. The Lancers rallied to force a 4-4 tie with 1:27 to go in the third quarter, thanks to two goals from
Dominick Nevarez and another from
Logan Mena.
Britton's first goal to start the fourth quarter maintained the tie, 5-5, with 7:23 to play. The Spartans scored two goals in a row to go up 7-5 with 5:40 remaining.
Twenty-eight seconds later, a goal from
Kyle Rasmussen kept hope alive for CBU.
Hunter Barnett scored less than a minute after that to force the 7-7 tie with 4:19 remaining. The Lancer defense held strong over the final minutes, and allowed Britton to net the decider with 1:39 to play.
Earlier Saturday, CBU ended its game with Whittier on a 4-1 run. The fifth-ranked Poets of NCAA Division III just pulled out the 12-11 win, despite a Mena hat trick and two more goals from Britton.
CBU took a 3-1 lead to start the game after a pair of goals from Mena and another from
Tanner Shore in the first quarter. Whittier would tie the score, 3-3, going into the third and take a 5-4 lead into halftime. Goals from Nevarez, Britton and
Zach Lowery gave the Lancers a 7-6 edge with 3:15 left in the third frame.
A 4-0 run carrying over from the third into the fourth gave the Poets an 11-7 lead with 5:22 to play. The Lancers unleashed a 4-1 run of their own to fight back within a goal with 1:50 to play. Rasmussen, Mena, Britton and Barnett once again all contributed to the run.
There was a chance to tie the game when CBU drew an ejection and called timeout with 26 seconds remaining. The Lancers got off two power-play shots in hopes of forcing overtime, but were just off in the waning seconds.
