RIVERSIDE, Calif. –
A balanced approach helped California Baptist University overcome Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 158-82 in its second-to-last home meet of the season on Friday afternoon.

Seven different Lancers won an individual event at the Lancer Aquatics Center on Friday. Jerome Heidrich, Garret Chew and Brandon Schuster won two individual events for CBU. Senior Day is next for the Lancers, and if that wasn't exciting enough, they will be hosting two Western Athletic Conference foes, Grand Canyon and Wyoming in a tri-dual starting at 1 p.m.

"It's fun doing a distance meet, doing events we haven't done all season, with the 300 back, 300 breast, 300 IM and the 500 relays. We have been doing this distance meet with CMS for the last 18 years," Coach Rick Rowland said. "The men showed some real depth today, but we are steering our attention toward tomorrow, with two teams from our conference coming in. We are excited about that. It was good to swim some off events today, I think it's a good change of pace."

Heidrich won the 100 and 200-yard freestyles with respective times of 47.63 seconds and one minute 42.75 seconds. Schuster finished first in the 300 individual medley (3:00.10) and 500 free (4:38.94), with his 500-free time making the consideration cut for the 2019 College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America National Invitational Championship.

Chew swept both boards for the Lancers, with 338.03 points at 3-meter and 310.35 in the 1-meter event.

"Garret was our most consistent diver of the day, taking first place on both boards and breaking the 300 mark twice," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "He had two 60-point dives and averaged 50-plus points a day today, which puts him up there with the best in the country. I couldn't be more proud of him."

CBU swept first through third on 3-meter, thanks to Zane Freeman (288.30) and Tyler Stevens (267.83). Stevens also secured third place on 1-meter (260.93).

"Tyler has really stepped his game up, and locked up top three on both boards as a freshman," Couto said. "It's a lot of fun to see because they all work so hard in practice."

Josh Walters clocked a CSCAA NIC consideration time, too, with a win in the 50 free (20.76), while Jacob Leahy took second (21.63).

The Lancers' most dominant event was the 200 free, as they had the top-five finishers. Colton Babcock took second (1:43.60) behind Heidrich, while Justin Quiroga (1:43.84), Matthew Niculae (1:46.17) and Tanner Shore (1:46.43) followed.

David Miller led a first-through-third sweep in the 300 butterfly, with a win in 2:59.52. Quinn Birtles (3:01.39) and Adityastha Wratsangka (3:03.56) came in second and third.

CBU started the day with a win in the 500-medley relay, thanks to Robert Moseley, Sean Foster, Leahy and Matthew Niculae swimming a 4:38.49. Moseley also won the 300 back (2:57.43), with Niculae taking third (3:03.71).

Dylan Sweikert (9:52.18) and Josh Fluetsch (10:04.80) took first and third in the 1000 free, as well.

Shore and Moseley added runner-up swims in the 100 free (48.41) and 300 IM (3:03.12), respectively. Babcock also took third in the 500 free (4:48.38).

"Tomorrow is a big day for us, so I hope we built some confidence today we can take into tomorrow," Couto said of the tri-dual with Grand Canyon and Wyoming. "It is going to be tight, but we are in a great place as a program. Tomorrow is a big indicator because it's going to be three of the top teams in the conference in the same place. We'll see how we do."
