WBB Preview: CBU Travels for a Pair Against Newly Minted WAC Foes Tarleton State

1/11/2021 1:48:00 PM

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University women's basketball continues to roll through the 2020-21 season, recently sweeping conference co-favorite Utah Valley in Riverside. The wins push CBU's season record to 10-0 and their WAC record to 2-0. They also improve their active win streak to 13-straight, which is the third-best mark in the country behind only UConn (16) and NC State (15).

The Lancers used a huge first quarter in game one and stifling defense in game two to overcome the Wolverines. The Lancers lead the conference offensively in rebounding and assists but has been spearheaded on defense, leading the WAC in blocks, opp. field-goal (32.7) and three-point (23.0) percentages while also keeping opponents to just 60.0 points per game.

Individually, CBU tops a few charts as Ane Olaeta continues to accumulate incredible assist numbers as she now tallies 79 total assists on the season, assisting on 32.8% of all Lancer made field goals. Olaeta is second in the nation in that category and leads the WAC, but teammate Sydney Palma is making a run to catch her as she ranks third in the league in assists with 44 after adding 13 more against Utah Valley.

Britney Thomas continues to pace the field in field goal percentage (67.6) and rebounding (9.1 per game). Thomas (15.1 points, 6th), Harper (12.8 points, 8th) and Olaeta (12.7 points, 10th) all rank in the top-10 for scoring average.

This weekend's action will act as the Texans conference opener as COVID protocol observation prevented last week's road series at Grand Canyon from happening. Tarleton State enters the series at 3-6 overall this season, with Iyana Dorsey emerging as the TSU high scorer in each win.

Dorsey leads the team in scoring (12.8 per game) and assists (2.44 per game) while Lucy Benson paces the Texans defensively in rebounds (5.8 per game) and blocked shots (2.0 per game). Only one other Texan, Marissa Escamilla, averages double figures at 10.5 points per game.

As a squad, TSU leads the league in free throws made (127) and free throw percentage (73.0) while also protecting the ball well, averaging a league-low 14.1 turnovers per game. The Lancers have used opportunistic defense to their advantage all season, averaging 10.2 steals and 5.5 blocks per game, so watch for CBU to try to knock TSU off of their game in that area.
