SANTA CLARA – California Baptist University posted an 18-14 win over Brown to open the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament at Santa Clara, as the 18
th-ranked Lancers improved to 11-3 in their last 14 games.
Zach Lowery showed no signs of slowing down a day after setting CBU's all-time assists record. The senior attacker erupted for four goals and three assists in the victory over the Bears, while
Caleb Teraoka (four steals, one assist),
Hunter Barnett and
Joseph Griffin all had three goals of their own.
Teraoaka added four steals, an assist and won a sprint on the day and Barnett had two drawn ejections, a steal and an assist on the day, as well.
Angel Sanchez posted four points (three assists), two steals, a drawn ejection and field block.
Cameron Cullen also had two goals and an assist and
Toby Bumgardner added two assists, a goal, two steals and a drawn ejection.
It was a close game throughout, with Brown jumping out to an 8-6 lead halfway through the second quarter. The Lancers went on a 4-0 run from there on goals from Cullen, Lowery, Teraoka and Barnett to take a 10-8 lead 27 seconds into the third quarter.
The Bears tied the game at 10-10 but CBU pulled away for good with a 7-1 run highlighted by two goals from Griffin and one each from Sanchez, Lowery, Barnett and Bumgardner. It gave the Lancers a comfortable a 17-11 advantage with 5:24 to play.
The Lancers close out the weekend with two games against top-13 ranked opponents in No. 13 Harvard and seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
