MBB Preview: CBU Prepares for Three Home Games in Six Days

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University men's basketball is gearing up to play three games in six days on its home floor. All three will be Western Athletic Conference games against Dixie State (Jan. 12), Utah Valley (Jan. 15) and Seattle U (Jan. 17).
The Lancers will look to defend their perfect 10-0 home record this season. They were the first team in NCAA Division I to 10 home wins on Dec. 28, but they are currently tied for third in the country with 10 home wins.
CBU is one of eight teams in D1 with double-digit wins and undefeated records at home. Kentucky and Indiana are tied for that lead at 11-0 each, while Texas, LSU, Providence, Wake Forest and San Francisco are all 10-0, as well, coming into the week.

This will be the 18th meeting between the Lancers and Trailblazers, as the all-time series dates back to the 2011-12 season when both teams were members of the PacWest. Last season's series was split, with CBU pulling out an 89-74 win on Jan. 29, 2021, and DSU picking up a 79-75 win the next day.
Dixie State is in its second year of the transition period to full NCAA Division I membership, set to end in July 2024.

The Lancers have a 5-3 advantage in the series after the won three of the first four games with SU after they joined the WAC in 2018-19. The Redhawks won two of three games versus CBU last season, including the WAC Tournament opener on March 11, 2021.

- Head Coach Jon Judkins is the all-time winningest head coach in Utah collegiate basketball history with 583 career victories.
- Cameron Gooden is the Trailblazers' leading scorer with 13.6 points per game. He was named the WAC Player of the Week on Dec. 13 and has scored in double figures in 13 of 16 starts this season and in 27 of 36 games as a Trailblazer.
- Four Trailblazers are averaging more than nine points a game this season. Hunter Schofield also averages double figures (12.8), while Dancell Leter and Frank Staine each put up 9.4 points an outing.
- Schofield is the team's leading rebounder with 5.1 rebounds a game, while Leter is No. 2 with 4.9. Brock Gilbert leads DSU with 4.2 assists a game, while Gooden is next with 3.5.
- Dixie State has been efficient team all over the court this season, with a field-goal percentage of 44.7 percent, a 34.6 clip from three and 71.5 mark at the free-throw line.
- The Trailblazers have one opponent in common with CBU so far, as it defeated North Dakota on the road on a 78-69 score on Dec. 18. The Lancers beat North Dakota in Riverside, 89-71, on Dec. 7.

- Utah Valley is off to a great start to the season, with an 11-4 record and 2-1 mark in the WAC. Its No. 89 spot in the NCAA Net Rankings is third overall in the conference.
- The Wolverines have a number of highlight wins this season. They pulled out a huge, 72-65 overtime win over then 12th-ranked BYU on Dec. 1 and also defeated Washington (68-52), Pepperdine (86-74) and Long Beach State (84-78).
- UVU ranks highly in NCAA Division I in several categories, but its biggest strengths have been on the boards and defensively. The Wolverines' 8.9 rebound margin ranks 14th in D1, while their 38.7 field-goal percentage is 22nd. They also rank top 50 in assists per game (16.1), field goal percentage (47.5) and three-point field-goal percentage (37.0).
- Fardaws Aimaq is one of the top big men in the country this season. He averages a double-double with 19.7 points and 13.8 rebounds a game, while his 13 double-doubles are tops in the NCAA. He's a three-time WAC Player of the Week, two-time Lute Olson National Player of the Week and ESPN Player of the Week and was named to the 2022 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award Watch List by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
- Utah Valley is balanced on offense, with five Wolverines all averaging more than nine points a game: Justin Harmon (12.1), Connor Harding (10.9), Le'Tre Darthard (9.9) and Blaze Nield (9.1).
- Mark Madsen enters his third season as the head coach for the UVU program. Madsen is a two-time NBA champion, former Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach, and a Stanford Athletics Hall of Famer. He is just the third head men's basketball coach in UVU's 17-year Division I history.

- SU's success is thanks in large part to its ability to take care of the ball and shoot a high percentage from three. The Redhawks rank ninth in Division I with 10.7 three-pointers per game, 31st in the NCAA in turnover margin (3.9), 38th in assist turnover ratio (1.36) and 44th in three-point percentage (37.2).
- Three Redhawks do most of the damage, as Darrion Trammell (15.7), Cameron Tyson (14.8) and Riley Grigsby (14.0) all average 14 points or more this season. Trammell (5.4) and Tyson (6.1) also lead Seattle in assists and rebounds a game, respectively.
