WBB PREVIEW: Lancers Pack for Extended Three-Game Road Trip

1/10/2022 3:08:00 PM

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University women's basketball stretched its regular-season conference win streak to 18-straight on Saturday, defeating Chicago State at home, 73-60. The Lancers, now owning a record of 10-2 on the season and 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference, were led by a breakout game by WAC Freshman of the Week Trinity San Antonio.

San Antonio did it all on in her first career start, setting career-highs in points (24), field goal percentage (80), rebounds (eight), steals (four) and blocks (two) against the Cougars. She was also the primary defender for 30 minutes on the league's second-leading scorer coming into the contest in Aaliyah Collins, holding her freshman counterpart to just five points on 2-14 shooting.

Ane Olaeta reached another major career milestone, using a layup in the middle of the third quarter to join the 1,500-point club. Olaeta finished the game with 1,503 points, now eyeing a spot on the top-10 scoring list, needing just 16 more to reach it. Olaeta still tops the national leader board for assists-per-game, dishing out 8.2 dimes per contest, the only player averaging more than 7.5 in Division I.

The Lancers will now take the fifth-longest conference win streak in the nation on the road for a trio of games. CBU will make its annual swing through Utah, first taking on Dixie State on Thursday, January 13, in St. George before trekking to Orem to take on Utah Valley on Saturday, January 15. The road trip will be extended to include the makeup game against Seattle U on Monday, January 17, in Seattle.

The Trailblazers enter the game looking for just their fourth win in 17 tried against the Lancers, as the two are former PacWest opponents from their Division II days. DSU owns a 5-8 record on the season with a 1-1 count in conference, boasting a 57-49 win at Tarleton State before dropping its next game, 71-53, to Abilene Christian.

The Trailblazers do own a winning record (4-3) at home, largely due to an increased scoring output within the friendly confines. Dixie averages over 10 points more per game at home than they do on the overall season (75.4 home vs. 64.8 season), as well as recording better averages in nearly every offensive category while playing in Burns Arena.

GAME INFORMATION – Saturday, Jan. 15

The Wolverines begin the week with a 5-8 record on the year, and an 0-2 start in league play after dropping back-to-back road games against ACU and Tarleton State. Utah Valley was hoping to right the ship last Saturday against Dixie State, but COVID protocols within the UVU program forced that game to be postponed until Jan. 17.

UVU will now aim to break its five-game losing streak against Seattle U on Thursday before welcoming the Lancers to the UCCU Center. Utah Valley is led by Josie Williams, who is averaging 16.1 points and 11.7 rebounds per game, the only player in the WAC currently averaging a double-double.

GAME INFORMATION – Monday, Jan. 17
Opponent: Seattle U
Time: 2 p.m.
Location: Seattle, Wash.

Seattle U had a rough start to the week, losing to Chicago State at home on Monday, dropping the Redhawks to 5-7 on the year while opening WAC play 0-1. Their record will still look different before CBU rolls into town on the Monday, January 17, as they are travel partners with CBU and will take on Utah Valley on Thursday and Dixie State on Saturday in Utah.

The Redhawks led the Cougars by eight at halftime of Monday's matinee, but were outscored 38-23 in the second half. CSU took advantage of what Seattle gave them, scoring 21 points off turnovers and going 20-25 from the charity stripe in the Cougars win.
