WBB Preview: Lancers Set To Host Dixie State, Utah Valley

2/20/2022 11:20:00 PM

RIVERSIDE – Coming off a 10-point win against the Redhawks of Seattle U, California Baptist University women's basketball turns its focus to a pair of opponents from the Beehive State. In the Lancers' most recent victory over Seattle U was headed by the conference's leading scorer Caitlyn Harper, who recorded her 10th game this season with 20 or more points scored.

Dixie State and Utah Valley visit Riverside for rematch games on Thursday night and Saturday afternoon, respectively. CBU took care of business against the Trailblazers and Wolverines when they battled in January, defeating DSU 88-60 before downing UVU 83-68 just two days later.

The Lancers currently own a record of 19-6 on the year and 10-4 in Western Athletic Conference play, heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. If the WAC tournament were to begin today, the Lancers would enter as the third-overall seed, meaning they would be playing their first game against either the sixth, seventh, or tenth seed at 2:30 p.m. on March 10th.

Ane Olaeta led the way in the first match of the season, scoring a game-high 22 points to go with five assists, four rebounds, and four steals. Five total Lancers reached double figures in this game, but only Harper logged a double-double for CBU with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Trailblazers were led by Shanaijah Davison, who scored 20 points in her season debut for Dixie State, but took 23 shots to get there, going 2-12 from deep along the way. The third-leading scorer in the WAC, Breaunna Gillen, was good for 17 points that night, slightly ahead of her 15.5 point average.

Offensively, the Trailblazers rank in the top half of most of the major categories in the conference, but their struggles lie on the other end of the court, where they allow the highest opponent scoring average by far at 74.1 points-per-game and the worst rebounding margin at -7.3 per game.

GAME INFORMATION – Saturday, Feb. 26

Harper flexed on the Wolverines on January 15, becoming the first WAC player to score 30 points in a conference game. She was dialed in, shooting 11-15 from the field, 3-3 from distance, and 5-6 from the charity stripe. Harper wasn't the only one seeing a bigger basket; Tiena Neale matched her season-high with 15 points, nailing 5-of-6 from deep.

The Lancers will face the league's second-most proficient scorer this season as Josie Williams brings her 16.4 ppg average to Riverside. Williams is the only player in the WAC averaging a double-double, currently pulling down 12.3 rebounds per game. She currently ranks tied for second in the entire NCAA with 19 double-doubles.

Utah Valley does the little things well as they lead the conference in team free throw percentage at 78.5% and commit the third-fewest turnovers per game at 15.2. This could turn out to be a very clean game as the Lancers rank second in turnovers per game at 14.6.
