CBU Scores 11 Unanswered to Sweep NM State

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University baseball scored 11-straight runs en route to sweeping NM State with a 12-6 win on Sunday at Totman Stadium.

It was a battle of the bullpens, as both teams went to relief pitching in the second inning. The Lancers' relievers won out, as they held the Aggies to just six hits and three runs over the final eight innings.

Seth Mattox earned the win in relief after he threw a team-high 2.2 shutout innings in which he allowed just one hit and struck out three. Jared Villalobos also threw two scoreless frames for CBU.

Chad Castillo led CBU's offense with two hits and four runs batted in. David Martin added two hits, three RBI and two more runs scored. Michael Carpentier also had a two-hit game. The Lancers improve to 29-15 on the year and 15-9 in the WAC, while NM State drops to 18-26, 8-16.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
NM State took its first lead of the weekend with three runs in first and another in the second inning for a 4-1 advantage. CBU got on the board in the bottom of the first after three walks and a bases-loaded hit by pitch to Russell Stevenson.

A leadoff walk to Carpentier and three-straight singles from CJ Masciel, Martin (RBI) and Harrison Spohn (RBI) scored two runs for the Lancers in the second inning.

CBU tied the game with a run in the third after leadoff singles from Stevenson, Josiah Chavez and a run-scoring wild pitch. The Lancers then erupted for six runs and a 9-4 lead in third, highlighted by a bases-loaded, three-run double from Castillo and an RBI double from Jake Skipworth.

Martin drove in two more runs in the sixth to make it 11-4. Castillo added to his day with a no-doubt homer in the seventh.

UP NEXT
The Lancers will play their next five games away from home, as they make their final extended road trip of the season, with a game at the University of San Diego on Tuesday, May 10 at 6 p.m., a WAC series at Seattle U (May 13-15) and a mid-week game at the University of Washington (May 17).
