CBU Earns Huge Bounce-Back Win Over Texas Southern

HOUSTON - The California Baptist University women's basketball team is back on the winning side of things just two days after suffering their first loss of the season, defeating Texas Southern convincingly, 83-62, in Houston. The Lancers close the book on 2023 with a 10-1 record heading into the 2024 portion of this schedule, and 27-6 in the calendar year.

The Lancers were led by matching 18-point efforts from Filipa Barros and Chloe Webb. Barros is continuing her hot streak as of late, averaging over 14 points, and 2.8 steals per game over her last five appearances. Webb posted her ninth game of at least 15 points on the season, now averaging 19.6 per game, which is still the best mark in the conference.

For the first time this season CBU had five players reach double-digit scoring. Joining Barros and Webb were Khloe Lemon in her first career start, Nhug Bosch Duran who added a dozen off the bench, and ten from Kinsley Barrington.

The Tigers would open the game strong, leading 24-19 at the end of the first behind a 10-4 run midway through the frame. It was all CBU after that, outscoring TSU 26-13 in the second quarter to begin building a cushion. The Lancers took the lead with a 14-2 run at the end of the half and never gave it back. The score would never be closer than seven after that, with the Lancers sealing the victory with a convincing fourth quarter.

The Lancers' success today came from a lot of places, but there's no debating that they did all of the fundamentals very well. They shot a season-high 48.4% from the field and committed the third-fewest turnovers (15) of the season against TSU.

CBU will have an extended break, not playing again until the new year, reopening WAC play at home against Utah Valley. The Wolverines come to town on Thursday, January 4, at 6:00 p.m.
