Lancers Down Wildcats In Abilene

ABILENE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team squared off with the Abilene Christian Wildcats for the second time in program history and the first time in Moody Coliseum on Thursday night. The Lancers took the previous encounter 77-71 in Riverside, and this game saw the same end result, with CBU winning 77-75 to get back into the win column.

With the win, the Lancers break a three-way tie for fourth place in the Western Athletic Conference standings with Sam Houston State and New Mexico State. The loss drops Abilene Christian to 5-8 in WAC play and hands them their third home conference loss of the season.

Foul trouble cut Trinity San Antonio's night short, but not before she and Docas Wu put up 17 points each to lead the visiting squad. Grace Schmidt and Chloe Webb reached 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Lancers controlled the first half, with the three ball as their weapon of choice. CBU knocked down seven out of 15, with Brittany Klaman hitting on three out of her five attempts. The opening half was high scoring, with the teams combining for 78 points. The Lancers led at the break 42-36, their second-highest first-half scoring output of the season.

CBU stayed hot in the third quarter, adding to their lead to close out the period with a 65-52 advantage. They would end up needing that cushion as the Wildcats made a furious comeback attempt in the final frame, outscoring the Lancers 23-12 in the final 10 minutes. The Lancers held onto the win thanks to Webb's closing ability as she scored the final five CBU points of the game.

Next, the Lancers will stay in the Lone Star State to face the Tarleton State Texans on Saturday, February 11th, at noon in Wisdom Gym.
